Default Windows Update, HTTP 404 error

Here's a problem I hope someone's got the answer to.

Trying to access Windows Update, I get to the website ok, but when I click on Product Updates I receive an HTTP 404 error.

I've tried accessing Windows Update through the Start menu, the Microsoft website and many other shortcuts and links (with Norton Antivirus 2001 disabled and enabled)and get the same message.

I've reinstalled IE5, Windows 98SE and installed IE6 with the same result.

Tried Microsoft for assistance and they suggested the I go to Product Updates to download a fix for my problem!?!

Don't know what to do next; hopefully someone out there has a suggestion.

For your info my system specs are:

    ASUS CUSL2-C motherboard
    PIII 1GHz
    30gb hard drive (19.5gb free)
    320mb RAM
ASUS V7100 delux combo video card (32mb)
Creative Sound Blaster Live! Value soundcard
    56kps external modem

    Thanks for any help

Error 404, AKA. Page Not Found.

There is a small chance it is their server (microsoft), but it's most likely just your computers connection taking too long.

If you are using Xtra, this wouldn't suprise me - earlier today, downloads maxed out at .8kb a second.

Best advice - Try again later, or sit there clicking 'go', 'go', 'go', until it works. your choice

Don't know if this will help, but try it anyway. Inside IE, under tools / internet options / advanced, try de-selecting the 'show friendly HTTP error messages' checkbox ... it helped resolve a lot of issues for me when I was having trouble getting anywhere on slow connection days.

Dylan ... clicking on the 'go' button several times just exasperates the problem on a slow connection, as it adds to the traffic.

    Hope that helps.

    ...a couple of suggestions:

    (i) is the 'wupdinfo.dll' in your Windows System Folder (?)

Some 'cleaners' can mess this up and disable Windows Update in the process.

An easy fix is to type 'regsvr32 wupdinfo.dll' (sans quotes) in the Run box and press Enter.

(ii) Have you tried checking for and downloading updates manually (?) Here's a link:

(iii) Here's Mr Scary's FAQ on Windows Update, you might find something useful:

    Cheers !!!

Been without access to the pc for the last couple of months.

Tried all the suggestions mentioned above to no avail and then yesterday I was able to access Microsoft updates without any clear understanding as to whats changed.

Thanks for your time people. Much appreciated.
