Is it possible to purchase music from itunes and download it as an mp3?
no, its DRM locked. You could probably find some software to convert it, maybe.
You can download the songs, burn to CD as a audio cd, ( Itunes offers this option) then rip the CD to MP3 using something like windows media player, making sure you select untick " copy right protect"
Then you have DRM free mp3's.
Yeah you can:
In iTunes, go to Edit>Preferences,
Click 'Import Settings'
Under "Import using:", choose MP3 Encoder
Click OK and OK
Right click the purchased item you want as an MP3 and choose "Create MP3 Version".
There will be two versions of the song, one is the original, the other is the MP3

Why anyone would write software to convert AAC to Mp3 is beyond me.
Because MP3 plays in almost anything and AAC only on some devices, never mind which is the better codec both sound fine to most people.
The burn to CD trick and re-ripping definately works and you can use a C-RW to save wasting disks too much.
If you are converting always try to get the highest quality original you can, converting between compressed Audio formats is never as good as ripping from the original.
