Printer installation problem

My installed printers suddenly disappeared from Printers and faxes and received error message when trying to print that printer not installed.
When trying to install new printer from Printers and Fax I get the error message that "printer spooling services are not available. Have tried searching for help, but to no avail. When I try to install drivers from the CD it tells me they are already installed.
I am running XP professional and am on auto update I run the free versions of Zone Alarm and Avast. Would appreciate any help on the matter.

have you tried running sfc /scannow from the command prompt to see if any thing is missing from your XP, you will need the installation disc

Check and see if the Print Spooler service is running. Sounds like it's stopped.
