Default Updating drivers issue 8600GT (ASUS labeled)

My new PC setup is great, and it works well. I've got everything working, except for one problem.

The only driver that seems to work, is the one on the disc, which is from 2007!, so as you can see, the driver is very outdated and is "pre windows 7" so leads to a few issues when playing games (after a while, the game might quit).

I downloaded the latest driver off nVidia's site, which the driver is only a few days old if i remember correctly, and tried installing that, restarted, and it said it couldn't find the hardware or device or something, and my graphics were crappy. I couldn't find the driver on the ASUS site either.

I've gone back to the driver on the disc for now (after getting rid of all the traces of the failed drivers.

Anyone know what the problem is, and how the hell i can update it to the latest driver?

The video card looks like this (a PCI Express one? it's the newer slot after AGP)

Actually had a very similar problem yesterday, damn so called "correct Drivers" for a card and they wouldn't install.

In the end I used the Auto detect http://www.geforce.com/Drivers and it found some others that worked perfectly. You have to agree to the prompts, and allow the java app to run -- the rest is straight forward it gives instructions

Have just done this, and am now downloading drivers. Will install them and see what the outcome is.

Will this get rid of the ASUS software that installed off the disk? (smart doctor overclocking software etc...)

There should be an option to uninstall the previous versions -- up to you if you want to I spose. Personally I always do, just in case

Googled and it might be Smart Doctor doing this. Am uninstalling Asus software with IoBit uninstaller, Will restart after unistall and see if that has fixed the error, as device manager shows the updated driver, but it has an !.

Uninstalling the ASUS software fixed it.

Is there anyway to get the latest Smart Doctor and the other asus software so i can still have the ablility to simply overclock the card etc..?

You don't have to use Asus software there are other options. Why would you overclock a card of that age anyway? I imagine the difference in modern games will be minimal.
