    Default Dominion of New Zealand

Did you hear all the hoo-haa about America's Indepence Day, July 4th? It happens every year. Who, in this country, does not know the date of America's Independence Day? But how many New Zealanders know the date of their own independence day, 26th September? There is almost no recognition of the day when New Zealand became independant from England in 1907 - from a colony to a self governing country. It seems that the only people who recognise that day is the legal fraternity many of whom take a holiday on that day.

It is sad that more people in this country know more about American history than they do there own. Become enlightened. Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_of_New_Zealand for information on what should be our national day. Perhaps we could persuade the politicians to have a holiday on that day? If not, at least recognise the day.

Perhaps Dominion Day could replace Waitangi Day as more meaningful ?

As above. We currently have Waitangi Day or a day where mud throwing is the popular sport!

Quite agree. It certainly would be more meaningful than Waitangi Day which should be renamed Maori Protest Day.

What could possibly be more meaningful than a bunch of whities stealing a country? :S

I think this perhaps has to do with the fact that out "independence" wasn't though blood and fire and we have the same monarch...

I'm certain that were we to become a republic, we would celebrate it.

We still have the same Monarch??? On Dominion Day King Edward was about and currently it's Queen Lizzie

What, exactly, is the benefit to NZ Citizens as a whole if we were to be a Republic as you see it?

None, I'm pro monarchy, if for no other reason than nostalgia.

    It was a hypothetical scenario.

Edit: Although I support the notion of a Republic if that means we ban the notion of maori kings and queens.

I would not mind so much if NZ became a Republic if we could get rid of the Treaty of Waitangi but that will not happen as we have a well established grievance industry.

Then the other thing to consider is how will the Republic work and who will be our first democratically elected leader?

And then there's all those apathetic people who won't vote etc. I just put the Republic in the too hard basket.
