Default Another big quake in Chch

    Tuesday night, 11pm.

Geonet shows 2 big shakes in the last 5 minutes. A large part of the reading (in red) is clipped, so it suggests that at its peak it was a big one!

R.I.P Christchurch, the place without a CBD

Those people must be sick of the earthquakes by now.

    Poor bastards.

It would be nice for the earthquakes to stop.

Me and mine are OK, although our house is shaking more and more with each big one they are getting closer to us.

There had been a weird low level of 'noise' showing up on the drums right across the country some hours before this. I was wondering if this was evidence of extremely deep tremors taking place... but it's way beyond my understanding to do anything more than speculate.

My Son is convinced it is the dormant volcanoes are awakening after 100's of years. There was some news that I "heard" (can't remember where that was) Lyttleton seabed temperature rose around 4 or 5c after the feb quake.

Let's hope he is wrong, this one is very close to the Akaroa one.

Your son is thankfully incorrect in this case, according to Canterbury Uni geologists.

For those not keeping score, the good shake tonight was the 7006th aftershock we've had since last September. I think I've probably only felt about 2000.

Very good article in The Press this morning by Chris Trotter. Don't always agree with him but he has this one down pat.

What is going on down under this 16,000 year old extinct volcano anyway.

Placed the above under: Christchurch. Can we fix it?

Of course scientists would not want to frighten us any more than necessary.

At least the westies lost power for a couple of hours tho.

    Lurking.

Map of the quakes positions over time

    http://www.gns.cri.nz/Home/News-and-...aftershock-map

    This is interesting.
The first series of quakes were in a west-east line mostly well to the west of Chch
The second set of quakes were also in a west-east line, but stretching past Chch
The most recent quakes are in a line roughly perpendicular to the others (NW to SE), following the coast.

If the quakes continue to follow the West to East trend, then maybe the next big one (assuming there's more to come) will be offshore... then you get the added woes of a possible tsunami.
