    Default Help! Network Driver issues

    Hi all

I have a Dell Optiplex GX240 here which belongs to somebody I know.

I fixed a few issues on it a few weeks ago and gave it back to them. Their teenage son rang a few days later to say the internet wasn't working and hadn't been since they received it back.

I thought that was odd as it was working fine before it left here - I had downloaded some updated programs and updated antivirus etc here with no issues.

He swears he hasn't done anything to it.

Anyway I got it back and the ethernet adapter was showing as error and so I downloaded updated drivers and spent hours mucking around with it to no avail.

I eventually surmised the built in ethernet adapter was kaput so ordered a half height gigabit ethernet card to pop in to a spare PCI slot.

I disabled the on-board network adapter then it went through the installing new hardware etc and went to install the driver from the provided CD and bugger me - same issue "there was a problem installing this hardware" and "windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The device driver might be corrupted or missing (Code 39)"

I'm out of ideas. Anyone got any suggestions.

    Thanks.

Did you get the drivers from the Dell site for the onboard NIC? Where did the drivers for the new NIC come from the maker's site or CD? Have you scanned the system, to see if there's malware on it?

Yes to all of the above.

The drivers were remarkably easy to find on the dell site - their machines may be POS but their support site is very easy to navigate.

The drivers for the new NIC came on the disk provided with the card.

Yep - scanned for malware with all the usual suspects.

Have a read of This article #3 esp - and its Note..

Edited: See this as well - look for that file mentioned. (ndis.sys )

What ever it is has nothing to do with the onboard, which prob will work fine.

    Wainui - you're a bloody legend mate.

That 2nd link (with a few minor tweaks) worked perfectly!

That means I have a redundant brand new network card here but I'm sure I can put that to good use somewhere else!

I owe you a beer - next time you're in New Plymouth let me know and I'll make good on that.
