Default How not to heat baked beans in a microwave...

Mrs Micro being absent I took the top off the can and put it straight in the oven (I didn't want to dirty a pan). I knew the microwaves wouldn't penetrate the metal of the can but I thought they would heat the top layer of beans. If I stirred it every now and then, the whole can would get hot - that was the theory.

What happened was most unexpected. There was a loud WHOOMPH, a flash of orange filled the whole oven, and the entire room had wispy bits of charcoal gently floating to the floor!

The paper towel I had put under the tin to catch any of the sauce from my stirring had apparently experienced a flash-over fire. (But there was nothing still burning). It was particularly dramatic because I was peering through the door at the time trying to see if anything was happening.

No problem with the microwave, but it was a task to rid the kitchen of tell-tale charcoal before Mrs Micro got home...

Why didn't you just put the beans in the bowl you were going to eat them from and heat that in the microwave ?

Don't most baked bean tins these days have a thin plastic coating on the inside?

I quite often heat bake beans in the microwave but never in the can, always in a non-metallic bowl. Baked beans can be messy even on their own and the beans can explode if over cooked. I always cover them and stir them part way through cooking.

Eggs are another potential for disaster when cooked in a microwave. I often poach them but ensure that the yoke is broken. Eggs can explode if not prepared properly before cooking them. Don't overcook eggs.

Wife put a frozen chook in the microwave to thaw out and forgot to take the twist ties off it ... they got hot and set fire to the plastic bag ... but you expect that sort of thing from a woman ... (ducks for cover) ...
