    Default Password for Wireless

My age is catching up on me. The new lappie is connected via a cable, while SWMBO is doing her bit wirelessly. Her lappie is in the workshop for fixing, so she demanded my laptop - and lo and behold, I can't remember the security password on the wireless connection for her to log on. At the end of the day I saw my neighbour had his wireless unsecured, asked him and connected through that. How do I easily get to the password in Win 7 - and this time I won't write it down on a piece of paper, because one tends to forget where you put the piece of paper. Will write it on the bottom of the wireless.

Should one use one of the free password detectors? I saw that Win 7 got the facility of showing the password when you tick a little box, but I don't think she's on Win 7 - she's on the school system and it's something like XP Server.

The password is not in the PC - it's in the router.

Easiest way - log into the router Via your computer connected Via cable - go into the security tab in the router - and write down what ever the password is.
If its like some routers and wont show the password, just a row of dots - change the password, then when the other laptop comes back, simply enter the new password when connecting.

sarel, are you talking about a security password, or the WEP key?

That only works if you are already connected to the wireless in question normally.

better off simply going into the routers settings Via a connected PC (ethernet) and simply looking at what the WEP key is.

If the laptop has ever been connected to the router by wireless, then windows will store the wireless key for next time it is required as long as connect automatically was used to save the key. But since the one that has been connected is the one in the workshop and so unavailable, wireless_key.html might not be useful in this instance.

This has reminded me: was at a friends home recently and tried to connect to the wireless router. It was WEP secured so I asked him for the key...no idea! It had been set up by a tech and nothing written down that I could find.

I used a cable so all good except I was stuck on the floor in a sunporch.

So...what can one do in such a situation? I'd be a little reluctant to reset my friends laptop which has the key remembered in it. I assume his teenage children simply don't use the net on their own laptops because nobody in the household has any knowledge of WEP keys etc.
