We bought ours in 1992, was actually a mid model cos some were selling 286 and 486.

1997 bro went to uni and kept the case and PSU and upgraded to a AMD K6 - 200Mhz 32MB (with a ATX and a AT compatible motherboard). That was used for about until 2005/06 when we got a AMD Sempron and also upgraded the case to a real ATX.

1996 I went to study away from home with a 2nd hand Tosh laptop 486-DX3-75 16MB. Had for 1yr as I got another used laptop off someone else, IBM Thinkpad Pentium 166Mhz MMX. Then sold it as I went to homestay which the guy was a uni comp tech. Then I got a used IBM Thinkpad PII-233 I think. Then I got a Thinkpad P3-600 which now still as a print server, all fine but LCD dead and one USB port dead and a mouse key and a key off the keyb that fell off. Now I have a Core 2 Duo Thinkpad 1.6Ghz or something bought just 1yr ago (used).

I like Thinkpads. They are the only brand I really trust.
They are more pricey here, so I get them used. Much more affordable overseas. Haven't tried the Lenovo Ideapad thou - that's the consumer range.

To me they are v professional, doesn't have tons of features or the best bang thou. They have auto HD parks with motion detectors, drain holes at the bottom of the laptop, spill resistant laptop. Arguably the best keyboard out there. All the models have the same trademark cosmetic look. I always like the X series for its portable-ness.

Only quarm is that these days the cheap Netbooks have a lot of appeal and Thinkpads hasn't got a equiv one out yet other than it's X200e I think that's what they call it. But that is larger ...

I saw one company and they used a T43 or something running Linux connected to a corporate network switch (Cisco) and it was used to clone images onto former leased computers.

They also have more consistency, if you got an avg model or a high end one you know the accessories and drives are swappable and even thou I didn't need all of them the range was/is comprehensive. You could have a CD/DVD/CDRW/DVDRW/Super120/ZIP/2nd HDD or cellular modem or 2nd battery or just a cover as a weight saver. And, they had these designs with the Thinkpad 760 I think (which might of been 1996). They also had a really good docking station that even supported a PCI card but I think these days they have moved towards dock bases instead. For those used to the laptop, you could get larger external keyboards with the trackpoint mouse.

In days I first got my first Thinkpad the keyb was superb with maybe Compaq which were also quite good - forget the model.

Toshiba at the time might of been pretty good but I found a lot of the keys like insert, home, page up and down etc .. squashed on the side and there wasn't a decent separation to the arrow keys and the alt and ctrl. Nowadays they are much better but I just don't like the grey color or the curves

A friend of mine bought a Thinkpad 600E (former Compaq Presario user) I think at the time when DVD were a early thing, that's quite good, not bad at the time for a $6-8k laptop . Then a year or two after I think, I got something similar off eBay

Before Internet Explorer, a TCP/IP stack like Trumpet Winsock was needed, but you can still download Internet Explorers 3 to 5 for WFWG 3.11 and it has TCP/IP included.

They wont render a web page very well though. I think along with IE 4 and 5 for 3.11 you can get Outlook Express for email, but I always used Foxmail 1.6 which would fit on a floppy.

Arachne for DOS was a good DOS based browser, better than IE because being open source it was updated more recently than IE for Win 3.11, and if I remember correctly it also had an email client built in.

Out in the shed I have a 200MHz Pentium, 128MB RAM, with a plugin HDD having WFWG 3.11, it has IE 3, Arachne, Foxmail, and when last I checked it networked ok with Win 7

You just need to do some Googling to locate Win3.11 sources/archives

    Damn!!

Just last week I threw out a pile of PCW and PC Mag CDs going back to the mid '90s. They contained a huge range of browsers and other programs that might have been helpful. I still have just about all PCW CDs from May 2000 onwards but their software is mainly W95/98 and W2K oriented.

There is always oldversion.com that has old software available for download, and the wayback machine http://web.archive.org/collections/web.html.

Neat project though, I have an old Compaq notebook running WFWG that has a disk fault and I'm keen to see if I can boot it from its floppy drive and get the disk back to life one day, but it is one of those some day, one day, maybe never jobs.

    Cheers

You just need an older 16-Bit PCMCIA Ethernet card. (Not new 32-Bit Cardbus which is probably what the one you tried is)

I have a 3Com one for my 380ED Thinkpad, works great.

Then you just need a browser (IE3 works) and the TCP/IP stack for WFWG3.11.. works great, although most websites won't look very good.

But I've done it, much faster to copy old DOS games over to the machine than using floppies...
Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready.

Thanx guys, but just realized, the floppy drive not working.
Whenever I insert a disk into it, it says I need to format disk. I format disk, and then it says i need to format it again!
