    Default Webcam Problems

I purchased a new Digitech USB WebCam with Mic, which isnít supposed to need any drivers.

However, I canít for the life of me get it to work on one computer.

The computer acknowledges it, and advises it is installed ready for use but no picture.

    Mic works fine.

It shows up in Control Panel Ė Scanners and Cameras - as a USB Video Device and if I Right Click and select Properties, then Camera Test, Iím advised Test Successful Ė You Imaging Device Successfully Passed the Diagnostic Test.

Double Clicking on the Camera Icon brings up the Camera Wizard but no picture.

Now Iíve tried this Camera on my main computer and my laptop and it works fine.

All three computers are running XP SP2.

Oh, Iíve tried changing USB ports but to no avail and the USB ports work fine on other apparatus like my Flash Drives and Wireless Dongle.

Itís got me licked, so any suggestions appreciated.

Most webcams need a driver, altho windows may install one. WHAT program are you using to test it? Install something like Skype, then you may see a picture. May pay to update the PC's with SP2 on them too. Since SP2 is no longer supported

I never trust the drivers Windows install for you...

For example: First time I installed Windows 7 it downloaded the right driver for my webcam, the 2nd time I installed it, it downloaded the completely wrong driver (for the same webcam) Go figure...

Suggest you go to manufacturer's website and download the latest driver for it - probably work perfectly after that!

    Ok, starting at the top.

Speedy, this Webcam was sold and purchased as a straight out plug and play and has no drivers to be acquired anywhere.

The test programme I used is the one provided by Windows taking the steps I described in the opening thread.

I installed Skype and it canít find the Webcam either. Everything else is fine.

Given that all three computers run the same version of Windows (XP Professional) all updated with the same SP2 disk that Microsoft gave away years ago, I find it hard to understand why only one refuses to work

Agent_24, yes I know where youíre coming from, but Iím a bit stuck when the manufactures donít provide a driver.

Does anybody know of a generic Webcam driver for XP?

Even the Motherboards of the two desktops are almost the same, one being an Asus P4S800-MX and the other a Asus P4S800-MX-SE.

Sheís a head scratcher this one.

Not really any generic driver for _all_ webcams available as they use different chipsets.

However, a generic driver is sometimes available for certain chipsets and usually works with most devices using that chipset. (be it a webcam or anything else)

I suggest you try to find out more about this webcam, what chipset it uses, etc.

Where did you buy it from?
Does it have a model number?

You could try plugging it into a PC running Linux, running the lsusb command and see what comes up...

If it shows a ? for it in device manager. Double click on it / go to the details tab. Change it to hardware ID's. Copy and paste what it shows here

Install this here - if anything will pick up the cam ( assuming it is working) this will.

    Thanks Guys.

Starting with Speedy: There are no !’s or ?’s in Device Manager- System at all. Windows insists the device is working properly.

Wainui: I installed Yawcam as suggested but alas no picture. It can see the Camera fine but alas no picture. (Yawcam looks a neat little programme so it’s a keeper for now anyway.)

I then had what I thought was a bright idea and installed Active Webcam, but alas it could see the Camera also but no picture.

    So to summarise:

Windows – Skype – Yawcam – Active Webcam can all see the Camera but none can produce a picture.

Normally one would say the Webcam was faulty, but it works perfectly on two other computers.

The USB’s work fine, at least for Flash Drives and a Wireless Dongle so I guess we can assume they are working correctly.

It really is a mystery that has me stuffed.

P.S. Agent, unfortunately I don't have a Linux Computer or access to one.
