    Default Giant crayfish discovered

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A new species of giant crayfish literally crawled out from under a rock in Tennessee, proving that large new species of animals can be found in highly populated and well-explored places, researchers said on Wednesday.

The new species, called Barbicambarus simmonsi, is about 5 inches (12 cm) long and has antennae covered with a sensitive fringe of tiny, hair-like bristles, called setae.

Huh, 5" (12cm) Thats are real giant dont you reckon.

It was the use of the word giant that got me. What does the word conjure up in your mind. Certainly not a 5'' animal

Don't the Americans usually call it a "crawfish", i.e. freshwater animal. And what we call a crayfish they call a lobster.

I think. I haven't had my coffee fix yet.

5" was average when we caught them in creeks in the Catlins many moons ago, used to use a rabbits leg tied to a piece of string and flick them out. Biggest would be around 8"

We use to catch them off a wharf at the Lake Taupo harbour. You could see them on the bottom under the wharf. We used a piece of meat tied to a line and drop it in. They would come over and cling to it and we would just pull them up. We had to give up doing this after awhile as the local maoris didn't like us pakeha kids doing this. That was back in the 1960s.
