Not everyone can get along ok with just chaepie hobby specs.
Many people from age 45 onwards get significant improvements by getting things tailored to suit them properly.

If you think that price sucks, you should bank on either of the following:

    1) $7,000 for cataract operations once you're 75 or older (adjusted for inflation until you hit that point)

    or

    2) dying before age 75.

While back in this thread though... note how the price she paid is way, way above the bait price. Very few people walk away getting the deals that SpecSavers advertises. Yes, I expect a lot of their initial customers may feel burnt by the low priced bait, and the triple-the-price final expense.

What will be really interesting is whether they return to SS again the next time.

I visited a couple of Specsavers stores before eventually returning to my normal optometrist - there was something about Specsavers that made them seem untrustworthy (on both occasions when I spoke to their staff and had them look at my prescription), despite the fact they were using brand name lenses.

As a matter of interest does anyone know around how much one would normally expect to pay for glasses in the Waikato area?
I'm not so keen on going into names or specifics here on a public forum but I'm after a decent looking refined set of titanium frames with what I imagine are fairly standard single lenses not bifocals, graduated, tinted or anything else fancy. I was somewhat surprised when I was given a quote of $660 & that was WITH a discount.

The Titanium frame will be the biggest part of the price. Is it necessary to be all titanium, or are you after any particular characteristic? Flexibility / light weight / style? The biggest issue with Titanium further down the track is that if it breaks it can be a swine to repair (has to be welding in an environment purged of oxygen... ie a specialised job needing specialised gear at a corresponding price)

I don't suppose it has to be titanium even though my current frames are although they're over 4 years old now and in need of replacement. As someone who does martial arts I do quite like the Idea of higher durability and the fact that I'm not needing to have my glasses adjusted every so often compared to my previous steel framed set even though I am generally quite careful with them. You're quite right about the titanium frames being the most expensive component, although the lenses alone are priced at 275

I just wouldnt waste that much money on myself just not worth it.
If I made 75 and this happened I would pull the pin.
Happened before I would retire early and just stay at a bar all day and drink piss.
