    Default Maximum length USB cable

I have an external HDD that I use for backup. I feel that it may be more secure in say a fire if I can put the external drive in another room. how long a cable an I use? I have USB 2, and use Norton 360 V3.0 to backup.

5m is the longest a USB cable can be without repeaters.

Depends what you are using it for also, I think

In case of a fire I would have the backup in a different building.

Yeah 5m oficially, I have seem 10m work ok, that was with a printer though. External HDD may need a bit more grunt.
