Default Things were OK for a while but

I was writing to reusable DVDs and having no problems. I used Sharpie pens to write what was on the DVDs and on the shiny surface all looked good.
But then my next lot of DVDs (Dick Smiths)had a cream finish - some sort of paint or plastic. Even better to write on.
But when I tried to delete the titles by using meths - as I had been doing for ages - the paint on the DVDs started to peel off.
Obviously these disks are unsafe to use, I can imagine nothing worse than bits of paint or plastic floating around in the works of my DVD writer. I scrapped them.
I went back to Dick Smiths and bought some more making it very clear to the salesman I wanted rewritable disks and most certainly did not want those with painted surfaces.
He tried to sell me "non rewritable at first" and when I got home found the disks were coated.
Dick Smiths of course gave me a refund but were unable to sell me any stock that was not painted - apparently it suits those who want to print onto their DVDs.
Noel Leemings etc were unable to help - apparently all DVD rewritable disks are now coated. But how daft - surely the point of rewritable disks is that they are rewritable and therefore their titles will change.
Hand writing the titles is so easy and quick over printing them.
Does anybody have an answer to this or know how I can get disks that can have felt tip titles easily removed without the surface breaking down.

Are you claiming that "rewritable" should mean that you can write on the DVD label more than once?

The disks are rewritable usually not the labels. Maybe you can use water based pens, they may wash off OK with warm water.

The ones you will have gotten are printable disks, designed to be printed on by an inkjet printer. Of course you can still get RW's with a normal "top" surface.

OK but where can I get RWs with a normal top surface.
All three shops I have tried (D Smiths, N Leeming, Bond & B,) say they do not have any of that sort.

I wonder about those good people who print on them using an inkjet printer. Do they accept that they cannot change what has been printed. Seems to change an expensive RW into a cheap R disk.

How many are you after, in other words how many would you normally purchase at one time??

Places like the Stationary ( and normal) Warehouse have them, or Computerfood BUT ring and simply ask / make sure first.

The toaster shops wouldn't know whats what if it turn around an bit them on the arse

I'm going back to Harvey Normans tomorrow - I'll see what they have.

I wouldn't use RW's of any sort, the failure rate is much higher.

Personally I use Imation DVD's and CD's, buy them by the 100 Spindle for CD-R & 25 or 50 spindles DVD-R. (not from Computerfood, but from one of other suppliers) heres Whats available

Edited: Verbatim also do quite a wide range.

Maybe you could put a reference number on the disk, and a paper index sheet in the disk packet?

I'm sure you would find somewhere on the instructions where you are NOT supposed to clean your DVDs with methylated spirits.

I'm not surprised the labels started to come off...

I change the contents of my DVD and CD RWs so much that I don't bother labeling them at all.
Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready.
