I have got a 40gig out of my old laptop and was wondering is there a way to connect it to a normal desktop PC??

Open the case and slave it to the main PC or chuck it in a enclosure or dock.

I assume it's an IDE drive not SATA?

You could get one of these (they are worth their weight in gold, have about 5 of them here use them every day, would recommend getting one they are always useful) or one of these.

If it's SATA, it will just plug into the desktop PC like any normal 3.5" hard drive.

I think it is IDE, not a 100% sure though.

Do those hard drive cases just plug in like a normal USB drive?

Yep - just like a big fat flash drive.

I've had too many of those adpators die. The enclosures are better.

How often do you use yours?

I've been using 2 for about a year and a bit now and they've never failed me..

We've got 5, 2 years, none dead (apart from the one I stood on, but that hardly counts.)

You just connect it up and use a screwdriver fasten the cover and plug into the USB - no software drivers required. Unless older than windows 2000.
