I saw her do a half-hour interview on BBC World's "Hard Talk" in the small hours of yesterday morning.

She spoke intelligently, seriously & amusingly about her new job. The atmosphere was a friendly search for information.
It was not only interesting to a New Zealander, but I expect also to the worldwide audience.

Criticism of her past policies is fair game.
Snaky comments for no apparent reason usually say more about the speaker's characteristics than the victim's.

Ouch... you are quite correct of course Laura. Very uncharitable of me to say that.

Unfortunately, like a large number of New Zealanders, that is the effect she has on me, and my wife, and my sister, and my brother in law, and my kids, and also most of our friends.

A highly intelligent person indeed. This I do not dispute.

I have Helen's BBC Hard Talk interview recorded, ready to watch. She is indeed intelligent, even witty at times, and I do believe she would be a better UN Secretary General than Ban Ki-moon. However, to be bluntly honest I also think kenj is correct: She does look like she still sucks lemons. No matter how polite we humans try to be, physical appearance makes a big impact on us, at least according to the psychological studies I have read.

Snaky comments be damned I hate her because of one trait.
That is when people under her had issues and were looking for her support she hung them out to dry.
Not supporting your subordinates when they need help is the sign of a bad leader and a scum human being.
Even if the people she let down were labor people.

There was a time when I thought "Kofi Annan - he is a good choice for Secretary General because surely he will sort out the mess in Africa."

    Yeah, right!

BTW, my dentist was sent a Labour advert during an election time - Vote Helen Clarke, etc. He returned the advert with his business card, offering to fix Helen's horrible teeth. No matter how polite or self righteous we try to be, we humans are influenced greatly by physical appearance - especially with VIPs.

One thing the UN did for Ethiopia was stop their war with Eritrea and sort out the border.

I will bet it is very nice on the border,as for the rest..........

Conditions in Ethiopia are deteriorating - 136 thousand children are now severely
    malnourished.
A number that will more than double over the coming months unless urgent interventions
    are taken.
