Re: PC has died - I think

It's not the original hardware. Its a bit like the woodsman's axe that had two new heads and three new handles, but was still the same axe.

BTW and totally OT for this thread, I'm still working on...

Re: PC has died - I think

I don't have a spare power supply since the great PC meltdown of a few months ago. What I need to is to open it up and check everything out.

PC has died - I think

My WHS PC appears to have died.
When I power on, the disks spin up, but no POST, no beeps, nothing on the screen, nada.

    Suggestions?

Re: Windows 11 Latest Tech Preview

Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22533 downloading now. Described as having "a good set of fixes and improvements", but it all looks fairly minor to me.

Build 22526 appeared yesterday. Yeah right. All looks pretty boring to me.

    Re: An early Christmas present?

When I saw the new numbers I had a flashback to when I rejoiced at a 57. whatever it was modem.

    Re: An early Christmas present?

One thing I've noticed. If I use the Ookla desktop app I get the speed I attached, but if I use the browser version I get maybe 126mbps down , but still 80-90 up. What's happening there?

    Re: An early Christmas present?

I was finding 100/20 quite adequate so I'll keep the $20 for other stuff.

    Re: An early Christmas present?

I knew that was the plan, but (a) I was expecting to be advised and (b) as Waiatarua was nearly the last place in AKL to get fibre I wasn't expecting it yet.

    An early Christmas present?

On a whim I just did a speedtest and this is what I saw! Not bad for a 100/20 plan. :)
I don't know whether it is a Christmas present from Voyager or Chorus have done the speed upgrade without...

    NZTA Rego email is phishing

I just got a very genuine looking email from NZTA telling me my rego was about to expire and "click here to renew". Fortunately the date was quite incorrect so I poked about a bit and sure enough it...

    Microsoft support and recovery assistant

This just appeared on my desktop yesterday. I hadn't done anything (AFAIK) to request it. Has anybody used it? Is it any good? Is it malware?

Re: Help with access to late husband's computer

The thing is, I don't know exactly what the access issues are, and she doesn't yet have the vocabulary to properly describe them. That is why I've told her to talk to her IT instructor, and maybe...

Re: Windows 11 Latest Tech Preview

Sorry to be a grinch, and this is interesting, but it is totally OT for Windows 11. Maybe someone should start a new thread called "Laptop maintenance" or something.

I think you are being a bit harsh. This 70+year old woman PC newbie "is willing to have a go" in the sense that she wants to learn and do as much as she can. She doesn't know very much...

Re: Help with access to late husband's computer

It is a Windows PC. The answer to all the other questions is "I don't know". As you say, difficult to help remotely. That is why I suggested she talk to her IT instructor.
She now tells me she has...

Re: Windows 11 Latest Tech Preview

My personal (and admittedly slightly chicken) take is that unless you are happy to take risks that your PC might be bricked, stick with Win10.
