I did try just one operation and the result was the same. I'd thought of trying from a bootable DVD - I'll give that ago and also look at Minitool partition.

Looking at the headers with my limited knowledge it did look like the two messages went by different routes.
None of it is a big deal.

I had actually done that and I can see the point at which the timestamps separate, but I can't interpret the rest of it to see what is happening at that point, or why.
