Well used to be capitalist back then too...but things were made to last. I look at our bin and 90% of it is plastic packaging.
Ditch the plastic and we would have very little.
Electric Hedge Trimmer from 1981 - had blades sharpened about 5 years ago. Lots of non-powered hand tools as well. A fridge/freezer bought 1982 was replaced in late 2018- must state that the freezer iced up more quickly at that age. I wish we could go back to old style electric jugs whereby one could buy a replacement (Eutron?) element and screw it in oneself. All new ones seem to be moulded parts which makes repair impossible
trouble is the element costs about the same as the jug. the molded in elements don't seam to corrode as bad like the old ones, which is often a big reason why they die.Quote:

Until recently, I had a pair of jandals I bought when I was ~25. Used them every summer, threw them out two months ago when the sole finally got that worn down that the fabric pulled through.Quote:

I still have a Estwing hammer my dad bought 50 years ago , and still use it. Just the same as a new one .
Also various spanners I bought 35 years ago , and a Japanese socket set I bought from Farmers (better quality than Chinese stuff today)
Quality tools are still good no matter how old.
