Easy as, after you've done a couple.
When a print-head finally burns out, or whatever they do, I spend $30 odd on a new printer that uses the same cartridges, keep the cartridges, and dump the printer.
A Cartridge is good for 3+ refills and the savings go towards refreshments for me. :)
Canon has a nasty habit these days of changing one digit in the model number and you'll find the old ink carts no longer work. That happened with my last one TS 9060 but when I bough it's replacement it was a TS 8160. Same printer with no Ethernet Didn't know that when I bought it. Same physical ink carts but the old ones would not work in the new printer. They also had one digit different in their part number as well.

Yes you have to use exactly the same cartridge number.
I'm looking at a brand new Canon CL-646 cartridge sitting on my desk and it will fit all of these Printers.

Another thing that I disbelieve is that the original cartridges that come with the cheap printer are only half full.
I've checked the packaging and can't find a single difference, and when I refill them I don't seem to get any less pages, not that I've gone to a lot of trouble counting them. :)

even the manufacturers admit they do this.
Look at the spec & you may see a new printer includes 'starter' (or standard) cartridges , yet page per cart specs are based on their XL ink carts .
Not all, but most cheapy new printers dont have full size ink carts included .

Usually with the elcheapo printers it's cheaper to replace the printer rather than buy new ink carts.

My point exactly, and now you can make further savings by filling the ink carts.
As for elcheapo's, I've been using the Canon $30 range for years and done many test patterns. The elcheapo is as good as those 10 times the price.
How they don't go broke selling a complete computer with wireless, scanner, & USB for $30 beats me.

Because.....they charge a fortune for ink.
$300 odd a litre.
How many pages do YOU get out of a cartridge, filled or not?
I print about 400 pages a month, minimum.
I'd be getting another printer every bloody week.
