What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
There was an interesting conversation. Have you any stuff you had it for 20yrs and still using? Not just items that was bought second hand and you've not owned for 20yrs personally.
For myself that would be a typical family film SLR camera 2001 January that I used 2 or so years ago. My 1998 stereo that I use everyday (!). I even have a goretex jacket which is my own real substantial wet jacket from 2001 March or February but the inner fleece jacket is January 1997, also various polo trips that just got opened earlier this year which was from the same trip as the Canon camera 2000 December - 2001 January to Asia. Still might have 1 knockoff Caterpillar polo might be oversized! Obviously there are cars but that is a bit more common and stuff lying in the garage like screwdrivers and tools. Ditto old travel books, atlases and dictionaries etc ...
Cheers.

Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
SWMBO.:D First hand, not second hand. And I still have lots of use for her. She's very handy. :clap

My lawnmower would be just on 19 years, bought it just after we moved into our first house. And we've only just started replacing some of our towels which would be the same age (wedding presents).
Handtools,I'd have the odd one older that 19 years.

Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?

Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
I have a Goldair electric bread knife that I bought in Sydney back in 1980 for about $25 from memory. That's when they were selling here for about $100 Still works fine and use it every week.

Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
Stainless steel insulated coffee mug that my daughter have me in 2003. 18 years ago in January. I drink at least 6+ cups of coffee a day. A lot of days 7 cups. That's a tad under 40,000 buckets of sludge I have had out of it in that time. Keeps the coffee quite warm for ages.
Good for probably more years than I am...........
Ken :)

Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
LOL, my mum had heaps of stuff.
I just ditched the bed base. That was 40.
I still own and use the dryer, that's 41.
Freezer, is about 35.
-
Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
Absolutely, I can certainly relate to this.
-
Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
A Fisher & Paykel fridge/freezer (about 33 years old) and a hammer (about 40 years old) left behind by my wife's first husband. (thanks, Tony)
-
Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
SWMBO says she has had me for nearly 3 of those 20s. Said she doesn't know whether the raffle ticket she won me with, was worth the 6d she paid.

My collection of porn, VCRs Penthouses Hustlers and Playboy.

Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
It's not always a good thing. My mum was using a fryer...I tossed the chips, offending her, had it 20 yrs she said, using it for 20 yrs she said.
Oh yes.
I took it apart after trying 3 sinkloads and still not getting it clean.
This lump fell out...like dark brown soap....
Not changed the oil in 20 yrs?? I said to my brother, as she used olive oil too, it's amazing it didn't catch fire and he said yes it used to.
We no longer have a fryer at all. I do oven chips.
-
Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
Lounge suite (30 years), car ('94 Toyota Celica, coming up 20 years this year), lawn mower (Rover - just died a few weeks back, 30 years), deep fryer (at least 30 years), coffee table (20 years plus),
stereo (20 years plus - tape decks no longer work due to perished belts) ...
Probably some other things as well.
Merry Christmas All :-)

Around the place there's great grandchildren older than that; it's safe to say they're in daily use but none have even had new batteries yet. . . .
-
Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
Not quite 20 years but will be next year.
Our push mower (It was 2nd hand when we bought it too back in 2001) and our washing machine and drier.

Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
Too numerous to list here.
Go back 70 years and I have a couple or three.
Golfing gear, still use the odd club for exercise.
Bob CHARLES Terylene slacks, use for gardening.
Gabardine raincoat, to use in the rain.

Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
I have to comment on our bed issue.
The thing we got is a $139 slat bed from Trademe(new). No doubt a made in china thing. I had to assemble it.
There was one issue with the centre rail, I had to reinforce it...but....OMG it was so awesome, utterly brilliant. Same mattress, but what a difference.
Best sleep we've had in ages and no sore back this morning.

Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?

2. F&P Fridge/freezer, washing machine/dryer, mower, Makita circular saw, black&decker power drill, and most of my hand tools are all over 20 years old.
Too many to name ...

Both were hard wearing material.
Scottish tweed is another one.
If things were made to last like they used to be, we would not need Greta whats-her-name screaming at our generation.
Hope she restricts the number of kids she has in the future, to two or less, like our breeding has done. Me having a crack at Greta, rofl.

Yes back in history, not that long ago either, recycling really was. The rag and bone man, people washed bottles out and reused them, themselves or the bottle place.
Tins too.
There was no rubbish collection, cause there was no rubbish.

And yes, now we have built-in obsolescence.
Apparently the capitalists say it's necessary.
Well used to be capitalist back then too...but things were made to last. I look at our bin and 90% of it is plastic packaging.
Ditch the plastic and we would have very little.

Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
Electric Hedge Trimmer from 1981 - had blades sharpened about 5 years ago. Lots of non-powered hand tools as well. A fridge/freezer bought 1982 was replaced in late 2018- must state that the freezer iced up more quickly at that age. I wish we could go back to old style electric jugs whereby one could buy a replacement (Eutron?) element and screw it in oneself. All new ones seem to be moulded parts which makes repair impossible

trouble is the element costs about the same as the jug. the molded in elements don't seam to corrode as bad like the old ones, which is often a big reason why they die.

My Seiko watch which I bought from Stewart Dawson, a Dunedin jewellery shop in 1993. Still fit for purpose and accurate. Had to replace batteries several times. It still correctly shows the time, day and date. I looked at our nana's Seiko watch in the 90s and decided to buy one of my own. Sadly she passed away at age 100 in 2007.
I still own my golf clubs and bag which I bought around 1993 but don't use them now as I had a mild stroke in 2014 weakening my left arm and shoulder a bit. I could still use these clubs on a golf course or driving range but I wouldn't be able to hit the ball as far and straight as before my stroke.
-
Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
Older stuff is worth repairing too. Nothing new is built to last. We're all going to drown in a sea of rubbish.

Until recently, I had a pair of jandals I bought when I was ~25. Used them every summer, threw them out two months ago when the sole finally got that worn down that the fabric pulled through.
Still have a Panasonic RX-CT900 Boombox - twin deck cassette player with detachable speakers. Bought in early 90's, still going to this day although I mainly use it as my daily alarm clock w/ radio wake-up.
-
Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
2 nail guns, a skil saw, a jigsaw, a dynadrill, a dropsaw all close to 30 years old and until last year all used weekly, now its only the nail guns everything else has been slowly replaced with cordless tools
-
Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
Just clocked over 20 years with the same car - 1994 Toyota Celica! no - not electric LOL
-
Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
I still have a Estwing hammer my dad bought 50 years ago , and still use it. Just the same as a new one .
Also various spanners I bought 35 years ago , and a Japanese socket set I bought from Farmers (better quality than Chinese stuff today)
Quality tools are still good no matter how old.

Estwing.... Good for another 50 or 100 years. Had mine for 52 years. Good kit :)

Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
My estwing is 30 years old too and the handle (blue part) is quite thin now and you need strong hands to be able to use it. I always get new apprentices to try it so we can have a laugh when it flies out of their grip.

Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
I have in my garage a vintage Marconi valve radio receiver and use it frequently.
The RF, IF and detector stages are glass valve operated but I have converted the
AF amp and output stages to solid state. A few other component replacements
have given it a prolonged life with a good performance on all wavebands.
Still using a Weller solder gun bought in 1970 and a RS solder station 1975, both
of which have only needed tip replacements.
-
Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
I have Linn Sondek LP 12 2/20/1982 Turntable which only plays 33 rpm LP's made in Scotland which was bought when we lived in the UK and are still made today. After many mods although not used much still sounds as good as new. My grandson bought me the LAB LP for Christmas which I have never heard of before but sounds good to my old ears.
-
Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
I think we can declare a Estwing Hammer and Weller soldering gun indestructible. :)
Many have tried and failed to destroy them. ;)

Why does it only play LP's made in Scotland?

Still regularly using a Breville electric knife bought in 1990, a 1993 National stereo (used in garage for the radio), a 1994 portable "ghetto blaster" stereo system, 1996 Sony walkman for old favourite cassette tapes as the National stereo tape deck is stuffed, 2002 Panasonic portable stereo CD system also for radio and cassette tapes plus most of the garden shed and garage tools are 20-30 years+. Still wear some classic jackets and shirts that are 20+ years as well.

Small backpack to carry uni books. Bought when I started uni and I will retire in a few years. Got lots of patches and a new zip but still the same basic bag. Have used it daily for about 40 years now.

Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
A good machine. I am still using a Quad 33/303 amplifier which must be well over 40 years old now I think, but the only thing that has worn out is my ears. Hearing aids ruin the hi-fi experience totally.

Something owned but never used. A small heart shaped chocolate I've had in my fridge for 23 years, still looks good enough to eat.

It would have "bloomed". Or worse, have mold.

I just checked and no bloom or mould that I can see, and it's been unwrapped in a plastic container. Darn, for all these years I thought I'd been given a heart shaped chocolate but I see it's actually a leaf. Not sure I feel as sentimental about it now.

Re: What have you owned for 20yrs and still using?
20 years? That's nothing. I am still using tools that were my grandfather's when he was a young builder and blacksmith in the 1880s. I've had them for over 60 years and they're still as functional as ever.
Looking around my house, much of what I own is over 20 years old, including some clothes that I still wear today. I am still using furniture that I built in the 1960s. Anything 20 years or less is considered "the new stuff" in my world.
Buy quality and then care for it properly and it will last you a lifetime or more. Unless it's a car or a computer. Hammers last well!
