Whoa - phenomenal D/L speeds! (for me, that is)
I have always been happy when my uTorrent downloads get up to around 240 kb/s, and so you might understand my surprise when today I went on and got this:

'Scuse my language, but how the hell did I get such awesome speeds?! Half a MB a second? Yes please! :P
I have never ever got anything like this before, even on such excellent servers as Microsoft.
What I really want to know is, how can I obtain such speeds more often?
This has made my day. :)
Eg. 700 MB took 40 mins to download!

'Scuse' MY language too...you lucky BASTARD!!! :p
Re: Whoa - phenomenal D/L speeds! (for me, that is)
I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but what do you normally average? Because from microsoft I average about 700-800kb/s.
And from a good ftp/torrent/off rapidshare I average 500-600kb/s constantly. Unless i'm doing other stuff then it's like 300-400kb/s.
I thought this was normal?
P.S. I'm in Auckland on go large.

Pretty good but nowhere near what I got last year when I was overseas.
I downloaded a 900MB file in about 17-18 minutes!
It was coming down at 1MB/s!

Lucky you! Like I said, on uTorrent I usually average 230-240 kb/s. On Microsoft I think I get around 300-400 kb/s.
I'm just on TelstraClear 10GB/month plan (4 Mbps downstream / 2 Mbps upstream), and in Wellington. I don't know what else could affect the speeds. Are you measuring in kilobytes or kilobits?

How the hell can you get that speed on Go Large?

Thank you for your interest in our GO LARGE broadband plan.
We apologise but we are no longer offering the GO LARGE plan to new customers. Additionally, existing Xtra Broadband customers who don't currently subscribe to the GO LARGE plan will be unable to change to this plan. Specialist technical teams continue to review the GO LARGE plan, with a focus on how we can best deliver a no data caps service like GO LARGE for customers by managing traffic on our network. Until the technical review is complete we are not signing any new customers on to the GO LARGE service.
Re: Whoa - phenomenal D/L speeds! (for me, that is)
From microsofts severs i've had speeds in excess of 5mb per second and torrents are commonly around 500kbps.
I'm on TelstraClears cable network in Christchurch by the way.
The thing with torrents is, your download speed is dictated by far more than your ISP. It depends on things such as the number of seeds, the speeds those seeds are seeding at. The location of both the tracker and the seeds themselves etc etc
I imagine there was probably far more at play than just some crazy spike in your connections speeds. More likely you got onto a really well seeded torrent and made plenty of connections :)
700mb? Sounds like a movie file... piracy? naughty naughty naughty lol :P
BTW, what movie was it?
Re: Whoa - phenomenal D/L speeds! (for me, that is)
They no longer sign people up to Go Large. But existing customers stay on it.
All those speed apart from off microsoft are with flashget. If I don't use flashget and download off an ftp/rapidshare it's about 300-350kb/s.
And yes I am measuring in kilobytes not kilobits.
Re: Whoa - phenomenal D/L speeds! (for me, that is)
Rapidshare 300 to 350 !!!!!! I wish. Just downloading from rapidshare now (on Go large) and am getting a mighty 49.2 KB/sec. Thats for non subscriber.
