new fibre install = better cellphone?
My tech challenged neighbour had fibre installed a few days ago and says that now her cellphone call quality has improved. I've been telling her that the only connection between her cellphone and the fibre is if she is using wifi, but she is insisting the call quality has improved. Could she be right?

The placebo affect is actually real you know...

That's what I suspected, but I wasn't game to say so.

Absolutely. If she's happy, less anxious questions for me.
Re: new fibre install = better cellphone?
it could actually be true.
they could have upgraded the capabilities of the cell towers as the likes of vodafone are pushing customers onto 4g broadband. of course as more users go to 4g broad band she may find the connection goes poor again.
the other is if the fibre is used to connect to some cell towers which gives them more data flow so they can increase bandwidth on each connection.
Re: new fibre install = better cellphone?
And with an improved connection the cell phone does not have to keep querying for unfinished and noisy transactions over the internet if there was a previously dodgy connection over ADSL or whatever, this means that the phone's cpu has time to do more mundane operations and makes the device concerned seem slicker.
Since I got fiber (the most modest speed available) it's not really much faster than my old ADSL, if at all, but the computer feels so much slicker because of the better noise free connection and not having to spend so much time repeating queries for missed info.
Re: new fibre install = better cellphone?
OK, I get what is being said about the cell towers, but wouldn't that imply they had improved that at exactly the same time the fibre was activated? That seems implausible.
My own fibre is happening next Wednesday, so it will be interesting to see what happens for me.
Re: new fibre install = better cellphone?
She is somewhat agreeable about it
Re: new fibre install = better cellphone?
She could be on WhatsApp etc and using more reliable fibre data via her house WiFi.
However who knows, I met someone this week who was convinced that fibre was 5G
Re: new fibre install = better cellphone?
Is it possible that she is now getting VoLTE calls on her cellphone? Voda claims they are clearer in quality. I haven't found that to be the case, but that is what is claimed on Voda's and Spark's websites.

She's with 2degrees, and in any case, that still implies that the change absolutely coincided with the activation of he fibre - I suspect not.

I have had to tell her several times that using the 5ghz band on her wifi is not "5G".
And she is adamant that it is her cell phone call quality that has improved.

Don't 2 degrees use the Voda infrastructure?

no idea.
Re: new fibre install = better cellphone?
Vodafone has been improving their cell network because they want to force you onto 4g broadband and not fibre.
They are after the lions share, so before you even discover you have fibre they are forcing people to 4g and taking you off ADSL/VDSL.
By the sounds of it, the way they word the email gives you no other option. I am hoping someone has the email and could post it.

i'm in the middle of it at the mo.
there is no choice. they have closed the old account, issued a new account. already got the first bill.
i had a winge at them the other day because they had a fault and i lost all comms. not to sure if their cellular problem also effected adsl network or they just happen to disable my adsl at the same time.
but adsl back on and have been on that until i can get 4g setup. i've had to drag out my old networking switch.

There is a choice, go to another ISP . Dont reward bad behavior .
If you can get fibre , go with fibre over 4G every time.
Voda have even been putting some poeple on 4G even when that was slower than the VDSL they had .

Re: new fibre install = better cellphone?
yeah i think i will go fibre. i really do not like having everything running over just one network.
however for me, 4g is about the same speed and its cheaper.
