Printer Manufacturers are

Lying b******s.

The Epson Ecotank I had bought, well both me and the tech at the shop I bought it from agree that a)they are liars and B)most people probably don't notice because they don't print a lot.
I do, and thus I notice.

It was meant to do 3600 pages off black.
I got 1334.
On low quality.

No I don't turn it off all the time (and thus waste ink on startup).
Epson says: No error code (of course not!) and printer is fine.

So the shop refunded me,

Imagine if cars were like that...you fill your 50l tank and get 100km out of it, and the petrol costs you $50 a litre.
People would scream.

But bloody printers.

And don't say laser, the tech agreed with that too...they are just the same...except it's pages per toner.

What took you so long to work that out? :D

The user reviews. No-one complained about ink. But then, did they do an actual page count? I believe none of them ever again.
Including Epson, the repair agent went back to them, they flicked him off and said tell her to ring us.
So they then hung up on me twice when I asked PLease Explain.

Ahhh, so you were misled by the advertising and the Media.

No surprises there, that's the name of the game. :D

Were they full size cartridges? a lot of manufacturers supply smaller ones with the printer from new which in itself is a dirty trick. Applies to toner and ink and explains why some get a lot less pages from the first set of cartridges / toner.

I have no Idea how accurate page counts for laser printers are to compare but I ditched inkjets because the cartridges were losing ink or drying out without being used. I often go for months at a time without printing anything and I find laser is the way to go for that situation. Toner cartridges might have exaggerated capacities, but they last for years when not being used. I just recently threw away a fully functional Epson printer that's been sitting on my shelf unused for several years. A full set of cartridges was about $40 for the knock offs, and about $130+ for genuine, and I'd get maybe half a dozen pages out of them over 6 months before they started failing 1 by 1. It was fine back when I used to print a lot and use them up in a couple months.

Inkjets are better for glossy colour prints, laser are better for everything else IMHO. Both generally fail to live up to manufacturer claims.

They don't use cartridges at all.

You fill the printer from bottles, it's a tank printer.
I print every day. Not an issue for me.

What is...is cost of toner/ink vs number of pages.
Laser or ink...it's all the same ****.

The problem is in buying a consumer or home office grade printer.

You need a true commercial grade one if you want even a modicum of decency.

Not really...I have had commercial grade. Unless you mean the ones that cost $15000 or so..in which case no.
But then as a tech at various places, they were having to be fixed often too....the plotter at F&P for instance, now there was an expensive machine...but problematic.

I mean in terms of page yields. If the average Joe complains, who cares, but if your large corporate customer feels ripped off, you might actually lose business, so you make more of an effort.

What sort of Epson Ecotank was it?? Always interesting to look at the Amazon reviews on them.
I was looking at getting an Epson Ecotank 3700 when my existing Canon dies but looking at a Brother color laser Brother HLL3230CDW for about $260 ish. Problem is that the Brother toner carts are rather expensive unless you use ones from the likes of Cartridge World ones.
