View Full Version : Webcams & Skype

Hi there. Ive got someone who wants me to setup a Webcam & skype for them;
for vid & skype calls overseas.

Any advantage of Skype over MS Live Messenger for Vid call's? (& vice versa)

Will a $20 webcam do, or will it be to much grief (for me) compared to a $60
Logitech .

I know they will reluctant to fork out $60ish...(and may be unrealistic at what to expect with vid through Skype)

Any cam will do, as long as its got drivers. Nope Skype and Messenger will show the same thing.

Get Skype. Its video codecs are optimized to use less bandwidth with great quality.

You can get a $20 dollar webcam, but be prepared for possibly bad quality.

Get a decent webcam. I'm using the Logitech pro 9000. It's good, and will do Skype's HQ video. Shop around at computer shops for the best price.

I set up Skype for a friends father not too long ago.

Have never used Skype myself (beyond setting it up for this guy), but was VERY impressed with how easy it was to install, configure and get running. I could say a hell of a lot less favourable about Xtra broadband via USB. What a nightmare install that was.

They had a Logitech camera, which had a broken base (straight out of the box, brand new), but stuck it down and have carried on with it as is.
They use a seperate Skype phone handset for voice.

For those who do make lots of toll calls and already have broadband, then Skype is brilliant, and should save them tons of cash over the lifetime of the equipment.
