--------------------------------------------------
My HDD suddenly got too slow. and whenever i try to open any file from that hdd. my hole system slows down. and sound hangs too.
for example : if i open a video file from that HDD, than the video hangs and sounds hangs too. and my hole system slows down. same thing happanes with games.
i had this problem before.same thig happaned and than one of my hdd became unreadable. so i changed that hdd with new one. now the problem started again.
and i changed my graphics card recently. from NVIDIA Geforce 7100 to NVIDIA Geforce 9800. i know it's too heavy. but i chaged my SMPS with card too.

i tried every software, like "ccleaner, tuneup, ashampoo. defragmented my hdd. but none of them works.

the main problem is i can't figure out where is the problem, motherboard,hdd,proccessor,...or something else.

please i need help... i am freaking out. bcz, i can't backup all of my data.bcz, i am using 5 HDD at a time.

My system Spec :

Intel COre 2 Duo E7200 @2.53 GHZ
2 GB RAM
NVIDIA Geforce 9800
i don't know about motherboard.

Hey there, welcome to PF1:)

Lets see whats running
Download HijackThis from here and do a scan, then copy and paste the log here:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HiJackThis.exe

Also, does this problem occur in safe mode? Tap F8 on boot and select "Safe Mode"

Have you checked the temperature of the CPU?

Process of elimination, unplug things one at a time until you find the culprit.

I hope I have understood what you wanted, not easy for me to read pidgin.

My ENGLISH IS VERY BAD. so i am sorry if u guys can't understand.

-----------------------
Hi Blame6, thanks for responding. i am new in forum and expecting lot from u guys.anyway,
I scanned with HjackThis,...now what should i do with the log file? post it here?
and my system temperature is around 45
i had temperature problem after i chagned my Graphics card. .....actually this all problem came after i installed my new Graphics card. my temperature was above 100 degree Celsius !
but then i found out the temperature problem was only because of my CPU fan was covered with dust . so i cleaned the fan and my temperature came down
to 45 degree Celsius.anyway...that was like one month ago...
now...i ran in safe mode. but he problem stays. like i tested with a 2 GB file.
i copied a 2 GB file from one hdd to another one. it took like 30 Minutes.
and system hangs ... i mean not that kind of hang.that i have to reset my PC.
but the slowdown is noticeable.
and is this problem coming because i am using 5 HDD at once? some peapole told me that i should use only one with high capacity.
but right now i want solution of my current problem. because, i lost too much data before just because of this problem.
the problem was :
Suddenly one of my 5 HDD slows down too much..
than i run defragmention tool.
than Checked the Disk for Bad sector.
than when i try to open that hdd, it doesn't open.so i had to format it

Run Memtest from http://www.memtest.org/

crazy4sunshine
20-03-2009, 01:30 AM
Hi, Agent 24.
i don't understand what are you saying, can you explain a bit more please?

Agent_24
20-03-2009, 01:43 AM
Did you read the website?

Memtest is a program which can check your RAM (and some other parts indirectly) for faults.

Data corruption on your hard drives and slow system performance (Like 30min file copy time) can be caused by faulty RAM, or any other fault which causes corrupted data. Motherboard, PSU, CPU or RAM are often the cause.

I'm not saying this is definitely the problem but it's possible. Faulty/loose HDD power/data cables could also cause this.

If you go to the website and download the program either to burn to a CD or as a floppy disk image you then boot from that and it will automatically start testing.

Instructions are on the website, please try to follow them first and if you have any problem ask here

But first some other question: what is your PSU brand and how old?

crazy4sunshine
20-03-2009, 02:12 AM
Thanks for Replying, Agent 24,

i checked that Site. but which one should i download?

and what does PSU Means... sorry, i don't know about it

Agent_24
20-03-2009, 02:30 AM
Well it depends on what you can boot from. Do you want to do floppy disk or CD?

PSU is Power Supply Unit. I think you called it SMPS in your first post.

And yes, you should also post that hijackthis log on here too.

Rob99
20-03-2009, 09:39 AM
What operating system, XP or Vista?
What size are your hard drives (HD)?
How full is each HD?
SATA or IDE connection?
If IDE are they jumpered correctly?

You mentioned issues arrived after you changed your graphics card, why donít you change back to your old one for a test.

Have you tried unplugging each HD in turn to see if the problem goes away.

Post the Hijackthis log here.

Download the iso for memtest
http://www.memtest.org/download/2.11/memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip

Extract the iso from the zip file then burn it to cd with ImgBurn or any other burning software that can burn images/iso

Someone mentioned DMA - this is probably the problem if you're using an IDE HDD.

To check this - type devmgmt.msc into the run box, and expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers section.

Open the Primary IDE Channel. Go to the advanced settings tab.

It ought to look like the attached pic.

If it says PIO in the current transfer mode, uninstall the primary IDE channel and reboot the PC. When you reboot check it again and the current transfer mode shoudl be DMA.

When you reboot check it again and the current transfer mode shoudl be DMA.

i lost my data 2 times before for this problem, when 1st time the hang thing showed up. someone told me to defrag and to check the hdd.
so, i did that and bad sector found, and hdd became unreadable and i lost too many data. well i thought it was bad sector.
but when the second time it showed up, i was shocked than i bought a new hdd (160GB) and tried to transfer, but failed bcz, whenever i try totransfer any file, system hagns, and i had to reset, and things got worst. than i changed that hdd with new 160 GB. (15 days ago)

---------------

Now today. when i was transferring the data from that new HDD(160GB) i bought 15 days ago, tha suddenly my system hanged. and it was the same problem as before. now. what should i do? bcz, i don't think it was bad sector, because, it was working fine 1 day ago.
and i noticed that, when this hang thin happens, and i reset and start the PC.
tha i my HDD Ligh (red light) blinks strangely, like not fully shows and not fully gows off. it looks like it is indicating something damaged. i know it sounds crazy, but i am trying to explain as much as i can. because, this is the first time i got so scared of my PC.

PLEASE HELP ME OUT GUYS. :(

WHAT are you copying from the old to the new one??

And WHAT are you using?? (what program)

If youre copying programs (that have been installed already), it probably wont work. If you want to use the 1 TB, reinstall windows.

We could be here all year if we try and figure out whether PIO was the prob or not. I dont think anyone else is going to reply to this thread

I know it's weird, that's why i can't evan explain it to anyone else.

ohh, and one more thing. i forgot to mantion that. i chagned my processor 4/5months ago. and when i installed new processor, i got one weird problem.
the problem is :

when i shut down the PC. my HDD Light (the RED one) goes off. but the green light stays. and my Graphics card,CPU Fan,and other things stays on.
so, i have to press and hold the power button for 5 or 6 seconds to shut the computer completly. than i switch off the UPS.

and i am doing this since i changed my processor.

but when i installed the new 1 TB HDD.

now when i shut down my PC. green light stays on as before but now red light stays too. but not completely. just little bit.

---------

I just wanted to tell u guys that bcz, i think this has some connection with my current problem.
bcz, everyone turn offs thier pc normally. but in my case it's different. why is that?

i could be wrong, but depending on the voltage calcuations of some psu's they don't equal out at what they say they are. We had similar systems, although I had 4 gb ram I was running a 500w psu and that was too slow for mine, I had problems saving and burning. I've since upgrated to a 650w psu and since then have had no problems. Unfortunately this is a costly test. See if you can borrow one with a mate or see if a store will let you try it out.

Agent_24

That sound might be the HDD spinning down/up due to a bad power connector. Are they tight?

Try wobbling the power connector with the PC on. Does the HDD make the sound?

Leave memtest running, if it passes, a message will come up telling you 1 pass complete with no errors

Or there may be errors. In which case they will come up red on the screen.

It's pretty weird how your brand new 1TB drive is showing up as failing. However Seagate was recently having issues with these drives and SD15 firmware (which you have) and this may be related.

It's not impossible to get a bad drive straight from the shop. however since your other hard drive reports weren't great and you're getting all this data loss etc.. does seem like something weird especially if memtest doesn't turn up any errors.

Was your PC having problems before you put in the new CPU 4 months ago?

Also, what Brand/Model of PSU do you currently have and how old is it?

Hey i just finished my memtest, and it says no error found!
so, what does it mean? does it mean my hdd has no problem?

No, it means your Memory, CPU and motherboard memory subsystem are probably working fine. Which is a good thing.

No man, i got no error after installing my cpu, but i got many wierd error after installing my graphics card, my system overheated and shut down automaticly and i had to clean my cpu fan.
actually, my system never were fully helthy since i changed my graphics card.

So all the problems started after you installed the new video card? And at the same time you also got a new PSU. So it's either the new video card or the new PSU that's causing the problem.

i don't know what brand my PSU is, but it's not old, bcz, i baught it with my graphics card , bcz, i thought my card will need more power.

The brand should be written on the PSU. Just have a look at it

do u think it's possible to get my 1 TB hdd back to normal , i mean speed fan is showing that it's in critical position, so, if i install new psu and run the smart test again, will it be back to normal?

Once a hard drive goes to critical condition nothing will make it better. Since you just bought it, I would take it back to the shop and get a replacement.

What do u guys think the Main problem could be?

and my PSU is 500W

A 500 Watt PSU may be good enough but it would need to be a good quality brand. If yours is a bad quality one then it may not be able to handle that load properly and may be the cause of the problem.

i am asking again and again bcz, this time i can't waste my money for nothing, i want a complete solution this time, and if i buy anything, than i want it solve my problem for good.

It's hard to answer your questions when we don't know everything about your PC. If one of us was to sit down and look at it, no doubt it'd be a lot easier to figure out. But on the forum we can only go with what you tell us, so the more information you give, the better.

Now we know the memory is OK, the new CPU didn't cause the problems, and the problem only happened after the new video card and PSU, right?

It's very likely that this is causing (or is part of) your problem. I would check with the motherboard manual if you can use a 20-pin PSU (because some of them will let you) However since it is a very recent board I doubt this will be the case.

You will probably need to get a 24-Pin PSU or a 20 to 24-pin adaptor.

and i saw that my PSU brand is "Copy Smart". i don't know it's a brand or anything, but my psu has written on it.

Maybe it's the brand, maybe not. But any good brand would have their name on it, and you'd notice. So it's probably just some generic el-cheapo thing.

hey, my 1 tb isn't giving any problem i think, bcz, system running fine, i am playing game, downloading,....but speed fan still showes that critical error.

SMART doesn't come up with errors for no reason. Often a drive will fail without SMART telling you, but if SMART is telling you there's a problem, then it's almost certain you have a problem.

In your specific case, the SMART attribute listed as critical was "seek error rate" which is defined as:

Rate of seek errors of the magnetic heads. If there is a partial failure in the mechanical positioning system, then seek errors will arise. Such a failure may be due to numerous factors, such as damage to a servo, or thermal widening of the hard disk. More seek errors indicates a worsening condition of a diskís surface or the mechanical subsystem, or both. Note that Seagate drives often report a raw value that is very high, even on new drives, and this does not normally indicate a failure

However, in your case, since the value has reached the threshold and is also outside the average limits of that particular drive model, it looks like something is wrong...

anwyay, now what should i do? is there any other software out there with which i can scan my system more ddeply to get more info and send it to u guys?

Well if you can't find your motherboard manual you could try and find out your motherboard brand/model so we can figure out if it should run OK with a 20-pin PSU or not.. but that's probably not necessary..

Bottom line you should probably get a new PSU, something good. My favourite is Enermax but there are quite a number of good brands. Here's a good list: http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/101922.aspx A good PSU is always worth it, since a cheap one can easily break and ruin lots of $$$ worth of other hardware. Not to mention that some are downright a fire hazard...

Manual says:

If you intent to use a PSU with 20-pin and 4-pin power plugs, make
sure that the 20-pin power plug can provide at least 15A on +12V
and that the PSU has a minimum power rating of 350 W. The
system may become unstable or may not boot up if the power is
inadequate.

Even so, this may be your problem. I would try to borrow a 24-Pin PSU from someone first instead of spending money on a new PSU straight away. Even your local PC shop may let you take your PC there and try it out with a different PSU for free.

What's the exact error message youre seeing on the post screen / boot screen (to do with the Intel coding error)?

According to some sites, if it says something like Intel CPU U Code Loading Error, update the BIOS.

This error means that (the BIOS is older than the CPU thats installed), and it cant read the id of your CPU (it cant identify it properly)

Thats exactly what it means. First you'll have to find out WHAT the brand/model of this motherboard is. (Tell us what it is). Then go to the site, download the BIOS update. Depending on what the mobo brand/model is, we'll tell you what to do next

Till then, after you format the 1 TB, dont do anything else

Your CPU being unsupported by the BIOS may also be part of the cause of your problems.

You definitely need to update your BIOS, and I would definitely be returning that 1TB drive and getting another one

Updating the BIOS is easy but you have to do it exactly right.

So first of all you need to get the correct motherboard model. You said before that the box had "ASUS P5GC-MX" on it. You will need to look at the motherboard itself and see if this is also written on it.

Once you know the exact model number (from what is written on the motherboard itself) then post back here.

You need the BIOS update (http://dlsvr04.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socket775/P5GC-MX/P5GC-MX-ASUS-0518.zip) <- direct link

And the program to flash it with (http://dlsvr04.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/flash/AFUDOS236.zip) <- direct link

Unzip the BIOS update / program, to a flash drive or floppy.

You'll also need a floppy disk (which is bootable), or a USB flash drive (which is bootable) Because you'll have to boot from it.

Read the manual on how to use EZ-flash. It may or may not work with an earlier version of the BIOS

Did you rename the rom file? Or keep it as it is?

Unzip the file (with the BIOS update in it). Then copy it (to the flash drive), then rename it to P5GCMX.ROM

Then reboot press / hold ALT-F2 down, and wait for it to tell you its flashing the BIOS. DON'T do anything till it finishes

If you dont press ALT-F2, (and the flash drive doesnt have boot files on it), it WONT boot.

Once it finishes, and it tells you to reboot, reboot, then go into the BIOS and set it to the defaults settings, then reconfigure the settings, then save the settings

Altho it (ALT-F2) may NOT work with flash drives, only floppies.

If this is the case, you'll have to go to bootdisk (www.bootdisk.com) get a boot file, unzip it then copy whats in the folder to the flash drive (thats if the flash drive IS / can be bootable (NOT all flash drives are)

If the previous post doesnt work get this (http://dlsvr04.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/flash/AsusUpdt_V71304.zip) <- direct link

Unzip it / Install it (then unzip the BIOS update). And load the BIOS update FROM the file menu / load file

DONT update it through the internet. It may freeze..Once it finishes reboot, go into the BIOS set it to its defaults / then reconfigure it then save the settings.

ALT-F2 NOT ALT-F12

If that doesnt work your flash drive probably isnt bootable. Try the last post I posted.

Remember NOT to update it from the Internet, it MAY / WILL freeze. And then it'll be dead

Just a note speedy-the flash drive doesn't need to be bootable for EzFlash doesn't work, as the PC doesn't boot from the flash drive, it just accesses it from a BIOS application

Yup I know but not all versions of EZ-flash support booting from flash drives either (actually I dont think EZ flash 1 does at all). Only floppy

If his mobo supported EZ flash 2, it would have been easier, he could have done it from within the BIOS

Hey i tried ALT+F2 , it showed a menu, but it says cd rom not found, flopy not found, than says this line again and again. i think my bios is not bootable from flash, anyway, i installed the file u gave me , and updated from the file i downloaded than restarted, and after restarted it showed some CMOS error, i pressed F2 and load the setup deafult and continued,

AND GUESS WHAT? IT WORKED MAN! MY SYSTEM NOW SHUTS DOWN NORMALLY, I AM VERY HAPPY THAT AT LEAST ONE PROBLEM SOLVED COMPLETELY, IT'S VERY HARD TO SEE A PROBLEM SOLVED INSTANTLY IN COMPUTER.

Now, i sent the 1 TB for replacement, they are asking what is the problem, what should i tell them?

Speedy Gonzales

The default settings MAY be good enough. If you find that something isnt working (like USB2). Make sure its on hispeed in the BIOS, to get USB 2 speed.

Remember to save the settings, (if you change anything). Well we told you to WAIT. NOT to send the 1 TB back...Think of anything / something

Well done, you have updated the BIOS. Since this is an instant change, your problem of your CPU not being supported properly has also been instantly fixed.

A hdd LED can blink often. Dont worry about it. If it wasn't on the internet, it'll probably do nothing. What exactly do you mean the hdd goes slow?? HOW do you know its going slow??

With 5-6 other hdds in the case, I wouldn't be surprised

Someone mentioned DMA - this is probably the problem if you're using an IDE HDD.

To check this - type devmgmt.msc into the run box, and expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers section.

Open the Primary IDE Channel. Go to the advanced settings tab.

It ought to look like the attached pic.

If it says PIO in the current transfer mode, uninstall the primary IDE channel and reboot the PC. When you reboot check it again and the current transfer mode shoudl be DMA.

i had this problem for more than a year. doing only this thing fix it. until now I repaired my xp in order to fix it.
