View Full Version : Recover photos from a mini SD card

15-03-2009, 08:00 PM
I inserted my mini SD card into a friends laptop to view the photos and it didn't recognise it. I was asked if I wanted to format it so I removed it immediatly without closing it. I The camera now says memory card error.
Can I retrieve the photos on the SD card and how would I go about doing this? Thanks for any help. David

Have you tried your own 'puter?

Have you tried a Linux set up on your pc? I understand it can work.

There are a number of rescue software packages - I have one from Sandisc. I think there are some free ones available - no names, sorry.:(

What happens when you insert the card into the pc?

For software recovery try Recuva, then PhotoRec if it doesn't work.

I don't have a card reader with my computer. There is one on my printer but it doesn't read the card.

Time to buy one...

If your computer can't read it find a free partition recover program.

I like this one

Is it a SDHC memory card (4 GB or higher) by any chance??

If it is, that could why the printer's reader cant read it

Not all readers (well probably none of them) can read SDHC cards, unless it says it supports them / says SDHC on it

Likewise for your friends laptop

If youre using XP, what service pack is installed?

It's a 512 MB card. XP SP3. OK I'll buy a card reader. What about comercial data recovery firms?

Have you tried the links Blam gave in post 3?

Can you connect the camera to the computer with USB?

I can connect the camera to the computer but it does'nt read the card. If the card is not being recognised how can any programme fix it?

Well only way to find out is to try one.

See what happens

Go into device manager, find your memory card, right click and select uninstall.

Reboot and see if it comes back

Tried PC inspector with the camera connected via USB but it does'nt find the camera. How are SD cards formated ? Is it FAT or NTFS ?

Check if their is a white slide on the slide.

Set it to not locked

And have you tried my method above?

How are SD cards formated ? Is it FAT or NTFS ?

Usually FAT/FAT32.

Not many like or work, if formatted in NTFS

None of the programmes pick up the card in the camera so they can't work on it. I guess I will have to take it to a data recovery firm. Anyone used one or recommend one?

That's not going to be cheap at all. Try taking it to a photo printing kiosk in the mall and see if it picks the card up.

Ok, umm you can bring it here sometime, if you want.

I've got a card reader, and I may have a program that may do something

I'll see what I can do.. Send me a PM, when you want to come over (what date and the time etc)

If you decide to come over, DONT try and do anything else with that card

One last thing to try-download knoppix, and and boot into the live cd.

Then connect your mini sd card

We got it fixed, David came over here, earlier this morning. And I used Easeus Data recovery on it.

It picked up the card pretty much straight away.

Selected a folder for the photos to go to, on the hdd, then recovered them.

Took less than 3-4 mins. There maybe a program, (for the camera), to format the card, to FAT16.

I formatted the card after, but it went down to 241mb or something (it was 512).

Luckily, David brought a 1 GB card as well. The photos copied fine to it

Yeah the best bet in situations like this on cards or hard drive is a normal data recovery program.

Great job Speedy. Thanks very much. I went and brought a Dick Smith card reader and attempted to reformat the 512mb card to 512mb but no go. Wonder why?

Can you see the storage device in device manager?

Will prob be under "universal serial device controllers" since you're using an USB adapter

If you see it, right click, uninstall and reboot

No probs, umm, yer not too sure why it wont format the whole 512mb

Did it come with some kind of program (the camera)?? For formatting sd cards?

I'll have a look around and see what I can find

Did you get an external or internal card reader David?

It should appear in my computer as well, as separate drives.

Its probably working Blam, but it didnt format the whole 512mb here either (it formatted 241mb I think it was)

19-03-2009, 08:44 PM
Could it be that camera cards are formatted Fat 16 ? Would this make the difference?

Speedy Gonzales

Thats what I formatted it in here FAT16..

It still showed up as 241mb

I've just formatted (I think its a 512 sd card), its fine. It shows 489mb (you probably wont get or see all of it).

But you should get more than 241mb on a 512 mb sd card

Download HP USB Disk format tool and format as Fat32

It may not work with FAT32.

I just formatted this card in FAT32, the camera wouldnt turn on

So, reformatted it back to FAT

19-03-2009, 09:40 PM
Tried that.Still only formated 240 mb

Download HP USB Disk format tool and format as Fat32
