Mozilla thunderbird disappears

I just installed a new hp printer. Now when I open Mozilla Thunderbird it says I have to set up a new email account. This also happened on my other machine a few months back.
If I set up a new account all the mail I had stored disappears.
Can I get back my previous Thunderbird account, with all my mail in it?

PS I tried system restore,,,,it didn't achieve anything

Thunderbird is just a client, for web mail or ISP mail, so you haven't lost any of your mail.

It might be an incompatibility. If you give us your ISP/webmail(i.e gmail, hotmail etc) then we can hive you instructions to set it up again.

My ISP is actually xtra but I access my email through our own domain name which is
Manhattan.gen.nz
which is hosted by freeparking .co.nz
