View Full Version : Hard drive turns obstinate

My daughter has passed her laptop on to her younger brother, I said I would reinstall XP to get back to a fresh install. Why did I say that! When I went to run the recovery CD it came up with a partition error, which it said it fixed. Then partway thru the recovery it just turned off. Tried running various hard drive utilities from a bootable CD but invariably ended up with the laptop just turning off. Now when it starts up I can't even get into the bios, it says the "hard drive is locked.Enter user password"
Am I screwed? :waughh:

Any chance of giving all the Members here any specs or is it too late now?
I have know idea which Laptop it is or what CDs you have to reinstall.
Muck about with the bios and this may give you major problems.

Have you got the password?

If you give us the make/model of the laptop we may be able to crack the bios password or get you a backdoor password.

After that, you can tell us about the other problems

Crack the password?
Is that allowed?

Sorry for lack of detail. Blood pressure nearly normal now. Its an ASUS A6000
running XP and I was using the recovery CD(Powerquest) that came with it to return it to factory settings. When I ran the recovery CD it said there was hard drive error and it fixed it and then carried on with the recovery. Then the laptop just turned off. Now when I turn it on I don't even get the chance to get to the bios settings, it says the hard drive is locked and to enter user password. What that password is , I don't know, didn't know it had one. I think when the recovery CD tried to fix the error it actually made things worse. I can't get to the bios, I can't boot from CD.

Well it may be that there is a hardware problem but did the laptop work before you gave it an operation?

Yes it did work, although it may have had a problem as cooling fan was always running full bore. All I wanted to do was start fresh for when it got passed on to another user. Seventeen year old daughter seemed to be fairly keen for me to wipe drive and start again before it was passed on, so I said(famous last words) "easy, we'll re-install XP from the recovery disc", then all the bad karma started.

I don't think the hard drive lock is related to the bios and the password is stored in the hard drives firmware, so you're stuffed. Formatting won't help.

Sending it to a specialist would be more expensive than getting a new HDD, so I suggest you look for a new 2.5" IDE HDD:
