View Full Version : Intermittent Black Screen and Slow PC

Hi, I am hoping that someone can help my frustration. I currently have a A&R Computer (Intel Pent4 3.4Ghz, 1GB RAM, 200GB HDD) that is randomly locking up and providing a blank screen, whereby I have to hard reset the PC. The randomness can be anywhere from 2secs of entering Windows (XP HE SP3) to about 30 minutes if I'm lucky. The PC is also running v slow, with IE and Outlook taking forever to download.

I attach my HT log to hopefully kick things off:

You have a LOT of stuff in startup, get rid of some of it.

One thing would be to shutdown PCTools Spyware Doctor and only load it up when you plan on doing a spyware scan. Spyware doctor is a memory hog and slows down your computer.

Download and install CCleaner, then run both the Temp files and registry option.
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Then, uninstall Spyware Doctor and install SpywareTerminator and Spybot S&D

Update, and do a full scan with both.

http://www.spywareterminator.com/download/download.aspx
www.download.com/Spybot-Search-amp-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html

Download and Install Avast! as your main AV.
http://www.avast.com/

You will need to register them, for free, using email.

And if you haven't defragged, download Auslogics Disk Defrag and run it:
http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag

pctek, kennie, Blam 6, speedy gonzales, thank you all for the advice to date. I am working my way through your steps very slowly. My system keeps needing to be reset, but hopefully it will eventually allow me to run properly. As a means of advancing pctek, what do you mean by "HD4870x2. And other bits it shares the case with. "

I also meant to add that Spybot found loads of stuff that required 2 passes to fully clear.

Try reinstalling the graphics driver.

Look in Device Manager for details of GFX card

Also-does this happen in safe mode?

Tap F8 on Boot and select "safe mode"

Pctek pointed out last night that you have LOTS of stuff in startup.

I'm no expert, but I reckon you still have far too
many programs there...

I have only a firewall, and 1 of my several installed antiviruses in mine ( plus a reminder proggy which runs at startup, then removes itself) Works fine...
Why burden your comp with such a load so soon?
Surely the others will load when you actually need them?

Edit - I leave it to the more comp-savvy than me to suggest which you should remove...

The problem didn't occur during running in Safe mode for an hour. I have removed a number of the programs from startup, but there are more I could also ditch. The next installment of the HT log follows.

I have also updated the driver, but this hasn't made a difference and the fault still remains. Is there any way it could be DirectX related?? I am at v9.0c.

Change your power management settings in Control Panel to everything "ON" at all times

Also. it seems many people are having this problem due connected modems/routers.

Try unplugging them from your machine and see if it still happens.

Download and run winsockfix. From your HJT log it seems they are corrupted:

Speedy/Blam6,
Have completed the tasks you both asked. I also re-ran Spyware Terminator and found/removed Trojan.Agent.RL. The items I unticked in msconfig are:
FlashIcon, FusionRC, HDAudPropShortCut, KHALMNPR, NBJ, nxiz, OpwareSE2, and WMPNSCFG.

Get ccleaner (www.ccleaner.com)

Install it (untick the Yahoo toolbar), run it. Go to tools/startup

Tick / highlight the entries you unticked in msconfig here, then click on delete

Then click on cleaner / run cleaner (close browsers first)

I would install an AV program like Avast Home, if you want a free one, or NOD, if you want to pay for it. Then scan the whole hdd

Am I missing something, or is this forum's time, an hour behind??

I now have a fully clean system according to CCleaner, Avast & Spyware terminator. To summarise the situation: In safe mode no hang-ups, but obviously not everything works and when I go back into full mode the intermittent black screens come back. My frustration deepens......

Go to start/run type eventvwr

Go to system and / or application. Look for any X's.

Double click on them (look for the times this black screen appears).

Then click on the icon under the down arrow. Paste it here

Did you run WinSockFix? After that, if it doesn't work try this:

Go Run>cmd

Type in "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt"

and press enter

A while ago a member was getting black screen, and replacing the winsock stack fixed it

Ok that error may mean those drivers are corrupt

Uninstall Spyware terminator, Avast for now. Whats Fips?

Is this an AMD or Intel system??

Then reboot, then see what happens

Get this and run it (http://avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html)

Select C:\Program Files\Alwil Software, just to make sure all of Avast gets removed (make sure you select this folder, because it'll delete whatever folder you select)

Then reboot again

paulT1010
15-03-2009, 08:10 PM
That's Spyware Terminator and Avast removed. I have an Intel Pent 4 3.4GHz. As for fips, here's what I found http://www.file.net/process/fips.sys.html.

Cool. Is it better than before??

Or does it take longer for this prob to happen?

You could try reinstalling Avast, if you like (download it again, just in case)

It is certainly booting up and accessign the net a lot quicker. As for locking up, not yet, but I've been in safe mode all afternoon. Until now!! What do I need to do regarding those items found with the Event Viewer?

Go back to event viewer (start/run type eventvwr).

Highlight each entry on the left / right mouse clear all events. Then reboot

What comes up under application and system now?? The same errors / entries you posted?

This may or may not work (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889082)

For the 1st error. Method 2

Error 2. Is the sound working / the sound drivers installed?

Looks like files for Avast are still not loading. As well as FIPS

Click on the http links for error 2/3. See what links / sites they bring up

You may have no option but to reformat if it keeps doing it

paulT1010

Error 1 - Fixed, thanks.

Error 2 - Sound isn't working. I re-installed the driver and sound worked until system crash and sound was missing again.

Looking through Event Viewer I am now convinced that no evidence is logged for my video problems.

Hmm whats an A&R computer? From your first post?

Sounds like these crashes, may have been the cause of these errors (it may have corrupted a few files) ?

WHERE did you get the soundcard drivers from??

Umm, theres only one soundcard in the case right?? You using the onboard soundcard, or a separate soundcard?
