Ok I have a HP XW6400 workstions

3GHz Xeon CPU
nVidia Quadro 440NVS 128MB Graphics card

what's happenig...

2 things

1) PC will boot, go into POST fine and then start loading Windows XP Pro. Then it shuts off and beeps 2 short beeps (Beep.... Beep...)

2) The PC won't boot at all.

What've done so far...

1) Reseated memory modules (no joy)
2) Reseated graphics card (no joy)
3) replaced the RAM with 4 new modules (no joy)

I haven't swapped the graphics card out yet... we only have a critical spare available... I'm reluctant to use it at this stage... in case it is something simple I am missing... having said that it would probably be the quickest way to check the fault.

Anyone have any ideas?

Look in event viewer / start/run type eventvwr

Look under application/system for any errors (at the time it does it)

Double click on it, click on the icon under the down arrow / paste it here

Does it do the same thing if you boot into safe mode?

When the PC shuts down at what stage does it get to in loading the OS ?

As speedy asked does it start in safe mode ?

Where you wrote, it wont boot at all, does it boot again after about 5-10 minutes ???? - if so check the CPU fan is actually working, if its over heating there is a thermal cut out in the CPU that will stop it from booting until it cools down enough - usually takes the 5-10 minutes.

Ok swapped in a new graphics card... same model as the current one and still no joy.

I'm not booting in Safe Mode. Gets to the PRESS ctrl-alt-del screen and then dies on me.

I'll check this and update.

Well the fans stop spinning when the the beeps start?

Power supply?

I'm stumped on this one.

Yup. I would try another PSU

More than one beep is unusual. Usually indicates a problem.

So what BIOS are you using?

Can you try another PSU?

Is the CPU seated properly with the hsf?

Probably an important question - look up the beep code for the BIOS you have to see what the problem is likely to be.
