View Full Version : Lost password - Vista

A family friend has brought his laptop around after his sister guessed his password, got in and changed it and... long story short, he has now locked himself out.

Vista doesn't appear to be as obliging as XP in allowing one to use Safe Mode to get in and change the password so has anyone had good results with Ophcrack on Vista? It's a huge download so I need assurance that it will work.

Or is there something smaller/better that will do the job?

I've used this (http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/) in the past to fix this problem.
I made a bootable USB stick for it.

This (http://www.geckoandfly.com/2007/11/28/how-to-recover-your-windows-xp-and-vista-user-login-password/) article seems to suggest it's possible, but vista uses NTLMv2 hashes, much less flawed than the old LM ones.

Always get rainbow tables in advance, that's what I do (got loads of 'em).

Try ophcrack (http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/)

It's a bootable CD

easy as falling off a log - Well almost - there are several bootable CD's available that will allow you to change the password.

Many require you to download the program, have the Vista DVD etc - I have one that works well. I have the ISO image that burns directly to a CD, then you go in and wipe out the password - never failed yet, takes about 3-4 minutes to load, depending on the speed of the PC/Laptop.

Not being picky - but the one CYaBro posted had more failures with that than it actually working , Ophcrack can take hours to run sometimes - if you want a download link to the One I use PM me and I'll give you instructions on how to get it from my server - its 175Mb

Thanks guys. The program recommended by CYaBro did the trick.
