Hey,

Does anyone here know of a fix for Windows XP with SP3 and connecting to a PPTP VPN?

I have a client with a VPN server that I can connect to fine with a Vista machine or a XP machine with SP2.
Using the same login details on two other different machines on my network, that have fresh installs of Windows XP Pro with SP3, both get Error 619 and won't connect. They sit there for a long time with 'Verifying Username & Password' on the screen.
If I check the VPN server log it says something about GRE failed.

I have done all other usual testing like turning off firewalls, AV software etc.

Doing some searching on the net and it looks like there is a problem with SP3 and connecting to a PPTP VPN.

Any ideas?

I am going to call Microsoft tomorrow to see what they say.

Cheers!

Does it show event id: 619 and/or 721 in event viewer?

One of the MS forums say to install this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953761)

No there are no errors in the event log.

I will try with a static IP tomorrow and see if it works.
Thanks

One piece of advice - check that you're not using MS-CHAP (v1 or 2) to authenticate. It's been known to be vulnerable for years and MS have done nothing about it.

Well using a static IP has made no difference :groan:

That's Microsoft's Point-to-Point Encryption.

Scratch that found it, you have to create the connection then you'll see it

Yea that is the encryption, no point having a VPN without any!
I have emailed my supplier of the VPN endpoint device to see if they have any ideas as to what is going on.

One of the posts on experts-exchange (the answers were there, but arent in the link). If you go back

Seems to think it could be NAP (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/nap/napfaq.mspx) thats causing it (which is only in SP3)

Or this from the above site (dont know if its what I said previously)

Or if its the same thing

However, tried a second reinstall of SP3, this time with AVG antivirus disabled and the "Require data encryption (disconnect if none)". UNTICKED BEFORE the install of SP3 VPN works fine.

One guy did the above after SP3 was installed and it worked

Well I'll put this in the "Strange computer problem" book.
The customer wanted their laptop today so I delivered it and setup their new ADSL router and the wireless so that the laptop could get on the net.
I tried the VPN connection and it works!
No idea why it would not connect while on our network at work, while my laptop would, but then work fine at their home...:confused:
