Dual layer can be played in any drive as far as I know, but can only be recorded on drives that support dual layer recording, which I think most do these days.

Dual layer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_layer#Dual_layer_recording) store more than a normal DVD

And should play in any DVD player

DVD ram (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvd-ram)

But, unless the dvd player can play it / says it supports it, it wont

DVD RAM in my opinion is the best recordable DVD media out there. I have discs that I have quite literally re-written many hundreds of times, and they continue to serve me well.

However, bugger-all DVD drives support RAM (LG being the main, if not only manufacturer to routinely support them).

I have a Panasonic HD DVR (ie a hard disc TV recorder), and it is DVD RAM compatible, so I use the recorder to digitize media, copy them to DVD RAM, then transfer to computer via my LG drive, and then do the final edits and compression on anything I deem worthwhile of keeping.

RAM discs however are expensive, so I look at them as a medium for transferring data, not for long term storage or sharing of data.

If you want to use them, you'll need to take care with your choices of DVD reading and writing hardware.
