View Full Version : Slow boot up and App start in Vista Ultimate

Any ideas where I could start looking?

Done a Hijackthis online analysis - all clear. AV all up to date. Spybot run - all clear.

I have disabled a number of "unnecessary" apps in startup using MSCONFIG, but it still takes nearly 10 minutes to fire up the machine (Vista Ultimate - 32bit - with 4GB RAM and a Duo T9400 CPU).

Then when the laptop is running, many apps take an inordinate amount of time to fire up. Once the app is open, there is no apparent performance hit, app runs normally.

It's amost like UAC is doing it's check in the background...

Task Manager, Performance tab showing no unusual activity - well within tolerances - hardly gets above 50%...

Symptoms started appearing a week or two ago, but I can't pinpoint a specific date to try to restore to.

UAC is turned off. Windows updates up to date...

Before this issue appeared, boot up was superfast and apps opened almost before you clicked on their shortcut!!

Laptop links to a wireless network at home (or wherever I happen to be, if there's one available).

Any of the programs installed using indexing?? If they are, disable it

Where will I find out that Speedy?

I have no idea. I dont use Vista. If its like XP right mouse on the hdd (or partitions / properties).

And if programs like Google toolbar, and Nero are installed, I think these also uses indexing , its probably in their options somewhere

Post a HJT log, so we can see whats in startup (you'll probably have to tick what you unticked in msconfig first)

Hm. Reading symiggy's post on a similar issue, I have similar symptoms (haven't tried replicating his User Account problem though). I will turn of Google Desktop indexing and disable and see if that makes a difference... I will be surprised if it does - it's been installed since I got the machine in November, and the problem has only appeared recently...

taskeng.exe here (http://searchtasks.answersthatwork.com/tasklist.php?File=Taskeng)

Dwm.exe runs Aero

SmartLogon\sensorsrv.exe means the webcam can log me in

ALU.exe - now disabled

Looking at CLMLSvc.exe...

HControlUser.exe is what runs the function keys on the laptop

DMedia.exe - the jury seems to be out (http://www.winvistatips.com/what-is-dmedia.exe-file.php) on whether this is required or not

U3Launcher enables autorun when I plug in a U3 drive..

.... the thing is all of these programs have be installed and running happily together with no adverse affects for some time. So there must be something else that is conflicting that is causing the problem.

There appears to be no excess usage of CPU or RAM when these issues (slow start PC/apps) are occurring. Usually sits around 10%.

This suggests to me that there is a corrupt file somewhere.

I just need to know where to start looking...

Well you can tick these then tick fix checked.

Or delete them in ccleaner under tools/startup

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Google Desktop Search] "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe" /startup

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Photo Downloader] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Album Starter Edition\3.2\Apps\apdproxy.exe"

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Google Update] "C:\Users\John Carter\AppData\Local\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.ex e" /c

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ASUS Screen Saver Protector] C:\Windows\AsScrPro.exe

And these

O13 - Gopher Prefix:

O23 - Service: ASLDR Service (ASLDRService) - Unknown owner -

It could be alcohol thats screwing things up

johcar

Cheers Speedy - I'll give those a try.

Alcohol has been installed since day one also and I have it set so that it doesn't reload the previously mounted image on restart of the machine, but you never know....

Great Speedy - seems to have sorted it.

I just ticked the Google Updater (which didn't appear to work particularly well anyway) and the Gopher Prefix (whatever that is!) items and things appear to have gone back pretty much to normal.

Thanks for your help (yet again)!!!

Cool, good to hear one of them fixed it !

One other tool that Vista has is right at your fingertips - click the start orb, type in performance when Performance information and Tools appears, click it, on the left click Advanced tools, Then click on This as Shown (http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/performance.jpg) and it will tell you exactly what the problem is.

Vista has a truck load of features that most people have no idea they are there.

johcar
02-02-2009, 01:29 PM
Cheers wainuitech - that makes for interesting reading too. I still have four items listed there that I need to deal with, two of which relate to an NVidia driver causing problems with resuming from sleep or going into hibernation. I assume I can just update my video driver and this will fix the problem (I ask because I know my old Tosh would not let me update my video driver - it had a specifically-written-for-Toshiba driver...)

wainuitech
02-02-2009, 07:31 PM
If you upgrade the nVidia drivers make sure you do two things -
Make A restore point BEFORE you try to do the upgrade
Get the drivers from nVidia's site, dont try through windows update, as it will more than likely make thing worse.

The error on mine ( as shown) was nod32 taking 20.3 seconds to load this morning - But the whole system loads fast enough - so unless its referring to updating, which I have Nod set to do on every startup.

( Trade Secret ) if you want to exactly know whats causing problems, in the search box, when you type in Performance, select the other one, "Reliability and performance" - on the left look for Reliability Monitor" if you look at the graph, you will see X's, thats failure someplace, click it then expand out the lists below and it will give you all the information on "whats going on" ( or not as the case may be) Example (http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/Example1233556170.jpg)
