If my household is with Genesis Energy, how much a month would it cost to leave 2 pcs running 24/7? (neither of them will have a screen)..... each has a stock psu of 300W (i really dont bother buying high powered ones).... i wouldnt think it would be too much to keep them running...

Well as an example - once One of my servers was down for about 3.5 weeks until I finally got down to fixing it.
That month the power bill was about the normal as every other month - didn't notice any difference. so running two PC's 2 x of what Pctek mentioned 2x bugger all.

If you didn't use the clothes drier a few times, or the other half didn't take those extra long showers it would cost you less.

Here our power bill is approximately $0.20/kw/hr.

To keep things simple, let's assume that your PCs are drawing 300W each, all the time. That's 600W for 2 machines.
600W x 24 hours x 31 days = 446400 watt hours = 446.4KW/H
446.4x $0.20 = $89.28 over the course of a month.

Realistically, your PCs probably won't be drawing 300W all the time (and depending on the specs, maybe never), so it will cost less than that.

Of course. It depends a lot on the specs of the PCs we're talking about though - if adianmaz's machines have decent CPUs and heaps of hard drives which are under lots of load all the time, then it could chew up a good part of the 300W PSU. On the other hand, if they're ancient boxes sitting there doing nothing most of the time, then the power consumption will be much, much less.

a 2.4Ghz and a 2.8 Ghz. One has 2 hdds and the other has one, most of time will be idle-ish

Buy one of those power measuring gadgets from DSE.

Things that suck power like crazy:

Electric heaters
Clothes driers
Heat Pumps
DVSs
Hot water cylinder
Dishwashers


And however is moaning - tell them I pay $1.40 daily charge on my home power bill and $2.19 on the shop.

So using nothing here at all I still get a whacking big bill.
I know what Aucklands is like - my sons is 89c.

Yes I used to think that computers did nor draw much power, and leaving them on 24/7 was OK. And yes my misses always moaned at me when the power bill arrived.

Overall I do think their power use is significant and I now turn two of my machines off when I am not using them, and just leave the one on 24/7. Since I have been doing this I am sure our power bill has gone down.

Seeing as I have a PC shop I have a good idea of what they use.

Other items there drawing power:
Electric kettle
LED sign
Phone

And I use about 100 units a month.

I have actually monitored the use of an older 2 GHZ P4 some time ago, it averaged 140 Watts/hr (3.36 units per day) (no monitor) with a calibrated power analyser.

That's about $21 per month at 20c/kWh or $42/month for the two.

But pctek has the right idea, the meters sold by DSE etc are about $20 and are quite accurate.

My PC (in my sig below) consumes about 180W including the monitor on idle. 90% of the time it will be idle. Heavy load will consume about 270W including monitor.

Note my PC is at the high-end side, decorated by fancy lights and LED fans too.

why do they PSU with such high watts when u can run something like that on heavy load with 270w?

Not sure. I've heard though the GPU and CPU can peak at insane power consumption ratings for a few seconds. If the PSU can't supply that much power even for a few seconds, the PC would crash.
