Could one of you techie types please explain the following?:

I was looking at a Toshiba Satellite A300 running Vista Home Premium with 4 gig of RAM. When looking at the System details I was given the following data:

Installed Physical Memory 4gb
Total Physical Memory 3gb
Available Physical Memory 2.06gb
So, a) what's causing the two drops in Memory and b) can it be got back?

Thanks

You need a 64bit operating system to be able to have it see 4GB or more.
This is a new piece of stupidity I've noticed with "brand" PCs.

And the integrated graphics also uses a bit.

Isn't it also the case that Vista actually pools more RAM than XP so it can utilize it more efficiently?

Also the system itself will reserve RAM for hardware addressing, which can account for lower ammounts of RAM being useable compared against whats actually installed.

Thanks for the responses so far.

Bear with me guys - I'm new to Vista!

I've gone Control Panel > System and Maintenance > System - it's It's 32 bit and Premium has SP 1.

Where do I go to find out how much the video is using and also what sort of video card it is? In fact, I can't even find my way back to where I got those original figures! Can anyone help with this?

Thanks
