Myth told me I should get a Graphics card - it would improve performance. So on his advice I've d/l'ed Everest and got the specs. As you can see it's an older Sempron AMD chip. What kind of Graphics card would you guys suggest? As you can see I know squat about Everest so the whole report is here. XP SP3

ATI4850 would be overkill for all of those things, but it would give you a fair amount of headroom.

It also happens to be the best priced card Bang/Buck wise.

Well, at least its a PCIe bus, so we are not limited by that...in all honesty, that cpu will limit most current gpu's, however you want the card to match that is no more than 5-10% cpu limited...so I would say a little 86GT or something of that vintage...its still newer than the cpu...

This was one thing sarel was looking at. I suggested maybe adding a graphics card to free up the RAM used by the integrated graphics

A Gig Ram by the way. Will another Gig mean a hell of an improvement or not? As you can see, my requirements for a PC are quite basic, I'm not into heavy gaming, surfing, etc. A few emails, some gaming sometimes. I use the computer at work much much more than the one at home.

Yup, Pctek, Myth said the same about the slots.

If you have 1Gig of RAM already, I would not spend any more money on your computer hardware.

You will be best off optmising what you have.
Run HJT, and delete everything apart from your virus scanner. Also turn off everything in the startup apart from your virus scanner. Two minutes later, after a reboot you could find yourself with a muck faster computer.

Something I didnt see mentioned, Though you may be able to fit a high end video card into the motherboard slot. Be aware that some require additional power from the power supply via cables from the supply into the video card directly as they require more power than the slot on the motherboard can supply.

How is this relevant? its very common for a machine to be supplied with a power supply that only really meets the needs of the machine in its original spec, if you add a more powerfull and more power hungry card to it you may risk drawing more power than the supply can handle and having your machine shut down when the system comes under load.

Or in some cases your power supply may completely lack the 6pin plug that some of the video cards need. can normally use a 4pin molex to 6pin adaptor to solve that though.

Trust me, this is really annoying and gets really lame quickly.

Might not even be a factor in your case, but i find it pays to consider these things when planning an upgrade.

id agree, id have at least 512mb for an xp machine. I like to think my install is very lean, and even when I have firefox, visual studio and several other programs open, my ram usage is only 509mb.

If you are playing games, have at least 1gb, preferably more. My computer is too old to play fast paced games, but good enough for turn based games like civ 4. Civ 4 uses about 1.2gb of ram, I'd expect newer, faster paced games to use even more.

A common setup to play most games without any problems has been 2 x 1 gig of ram for a few years now.;)

Fix stuttering,slow loading time,slow respawn and makes games run/play smother and of course helps out your computer to respond faster as well. :thumbs:

When you can get a 1 gig ddr2 800 ram stick for less then $20 on pricespy then its really a no brainer.:lol:

Hi, while you right with regards to modern game etc, you are forgetting the OP res of 12x10 and the fact we arent dealing with a Core 2 cpu, therefore the cards listed above would be severely hampered by the cpu so much so that they would be starved of data from the cpu and run at perhaps only 50-60% of their capacity......

Remember the great thing about upgrading is you dont have to buy everything all in one go,you can spread it out over your pay days if you have to!!!:)

So if I was upgrading your computer I would start with:
1. RAM__(to make it run faster:cheap/easy upgrade dont need to do anything else).
2. CPU_________(next thing to do to make your computer run faster/play games better).
3. PSU_________(Have to so you can get a really good graphic card to play games).
4. GPU = (Graphics Processing Unit = Graphics Card).____(to play your games sweet as).
:)

Thanks guys for all the replies. Remember one thing - for the last year or two I've been quite happy :thumbs: with this PC - however bad the CPU was. I did upgrade the RAM from 512 to 1G on receipt. I have no intention of playing memory-sucking games. My current crop of games play quite well on the current system - so yes, I do have a 10 sec freeze halfway through a C&C 3 Skirmish :o, but so what. I just wait 10 secs and go on.

To me the most sensible option would be to get paired 1 G ramsticks. After that I may consider the graphics card, but to be quite honest, the integrated system is OK for me for now. I've got no need for a superduper new system - because I think upgrading is a pure waste of $$$, I will be better off buying new. SWMBO bought a flatscreen 42" the other day so my chances of buying something I want is really zero (and no, she won't "allow" me to get a new system).

Or
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+,dual core,AM2 3.2GHz.

And yes a new faster computer is allways better then an old one,but at the moment were talking about upgrading the computer he has at the moment!!!

Yes, but when you look at the contributing factors, such as Motherboard features, the fact that that much of a hardware upgrade warrants a new license. He's much better off in the long run investing in an entirely new computer, as it is highly likely that upgrading will leave gaps which will need to be fulfilled with more features. The Intel processors offer a much better performance to dollar ratio, because while you may look at the statistics and say they aren't that far apart, in overall use a Core 2 kicks the X2's butt all the way across the great wall of china.

However the games he said that he would want to play aren't exactly unusable on a 7600GTX, and my one still suffice's to play every single game that comes out. It may not be in full quality, but hey, when it's that much of a saving, it doesn't bother me.

The real limiting factors in his PC are the processor and the ram. You might be right in saying get a new CPU, but it would be a far smarter decision to invest in a new custom built PC then continuously upgrading. It's not parts are that expensive.
