I've an external HDD connected to my Vista machine via ESATA. When I switch ON the HDD first then turn ON the Vista machine, it works fine. But, when I turn ON the Vista machine first and then switch ON the externa HDD, Vista doesn't detect it. Is this normal?

It's not normal, it should be detected by vista once turned on.
Might it be a security/firewall issue?

No other firewall installed, only Windows own.

no Idea what board you have but Have a read of this here (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=85566) - sounds like the same problem as well as possible solution ?? ( post #6)

Edited: have a look at This possible solution (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950186/en-us)

Enabled AHCI in BIOS settings rectified the issue but every time I turn ON the machine it has to load this AHCI driver causing a few seconds of delay in loading Vista. Any other better solutions?

I've had this problem with my external drive as well but discovered if you turn it on after the PC has booted you can use Device Manager's Scan for Hardware changes to detect the drive.

It doesn't make it hot-swappable but you can at least use the drive. I just make sure my PC is fully shut down before I turn off the drive.

I might give the Microsoft hotfix a go as I'm now having problems with validating the images created by Seagate's Disk Wizard (poor man's version of Acronis True Image). The images are OK (they validate via USB) they just don't seem to validate with eSATA.
