For an upgrade to work correctly the XP HAS to be solid, bit like the foundations on a house, if the XP is shaky or damaged in any way Vista will be as well.

Some versions of Vista Dont allow upgrades, the only option is a complete install. From memory its only the full retail versions or upgrade versions that have the upgrade option.

Even MS recommend doing a clean install rather than an upgrade.

Personally I'm for a clean install.
Just do a compatibility test before doing so This will give you an idea if you are going to encounter problems. Its not a promise of a clear run more of an indicator.

The compatibility test can be downloaded from M$

I guess a clean install is best but I did an upgrade in Feb 2007 and it went fine. Basically, if your system is stable like WT said, the decision is up to you.

You should buy the upgrade version of ultimate though-there's a way to do a full install with an upgrade DVD :D

Many places are selling OEM these days without the need to buy hardware - thats cheaper still than an Upgrade Version.

Original equipment manufacturer, is what the initilas stand for. It's meant really for system builders I think
