View Full Version : My computer likes the internett

30-10-2008, 05:50 PM
Every time I come out of a screen saver situation, or hibernation - in fact sometimes in the middle of running some program my computer starts to dial my server (yes some of us are still on dial up).
It's irritating - I like to decide when to dial myself.
But I have no idea how to stop it doing this.
Have I a virus?
All comments welcome.

You probably do have a virus, although it could be an innocent program trying to update.

30-10-2008, 06:05 PM
More than likely, you have a rogue dialer.

30-10-2008, 06:09 PM
Easy enough to stop - But what OS do you have - XP or vista?

If its Xp, click Start/Control Panel/ Internet options/ Connection Tab/ Select " never Dial A connection" As Shown Here (http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/Dial_Up.jpg) then it will only dial up when you double click your dial up connection.

Download from my sig, malwarebytes, and update / run in full scan mode and see if it picks up any thing, delete anything it finds.

Open up Internet Explorer and go Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab. Make sure "Never dial a connection" is selected.

Have you scanned your computer for malware and viruses?

Thanks for the advice chaps.
I use XP.
I could have a rogue dialer - I do keep seeing something telling me it has not been able to update. But I admit I haven't checked the origin of the message.
Anyway I have gone the route of control panel etc and told it not to dial as recommended.
I presume that will cure things. I do regularly check for viruses etc and have not found anything lately.

Tick these then tick fix checked

Close browsers

LL maybe right, you may have a dialer (http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-010517-1801-99&tabid=1)

See if C:\Program Files\Instant Access\Dialer is on your hdd

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_05\bin\jusched.exe

If you dont have a remote for PowerDVD, you can tick this

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RemoteControl] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PaperPort PTD] "C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PaperPort\pptd40nt.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe

Whats this???

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zzzHPSETUP] F:\Setup.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Reminder] C:\program files\Microsoft Money\System\reminder.exe

Whatever you have by Logitech is it working??

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LogitechSetup] F:\setup.exe /skip_all_checks /p /start /restart /l:enu

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

This may belong to a dialer

O16 - DPF: {FA83E942-B796-46DE-9155-1632ECC5473B} - http://akamai.downloadv3.com/binarie...SS_1061_XP.cab

Then reboot

Uninstall all versions of Java, yours is way out of date. Then update it

Get malwarebytes below, install update then scan

Gosh thanks Speedy.
I will look into Java etc but I do seem to be OK as regards the constant dialing now.
I may be getting out of my depth if I do any more. I have a remarkable ability to follow directions carefully and still crash the computer and have to call in my expert to fix things.
However I will slowly - very slowly try to do more.
