I just bought Maxtor BlackArmour 320GB external drive and trying to do a backup of certain folders on my PC to the drive

I am using Maxtor Manager software that came with drive and i am running Win Vista

When go to do custom back up and try to 'tick' folders to be backed up i dont even see the "C:\users" folder in the folder tree. It just lists other folders on C: and just my documents folder.

Is this not possible with this drive or is it the software that came with it thats crappy....I would imagine thats the most common location people would go to backup yet its not showing up

Can i use third party software to backup my PC data to this drive - one which i can just specify backup C:\users and it backups everyones data? If so is there a good quality freebie backup tool/software on i can use??

I dont need something flash. Software doesnt have to have Security features - as this is one of the rare commercially avaiable drives that has AES govt grade hardware encryption built into it.

thanks for any help/tips

There shouldn't be a problem with using 3rd party software to backup folders to your external hard drive :)

A popular piece of back-up software would be Cobian (http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm), but Toucan (http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm)'s just as good and comes in a portable version too.

I use MS synctoy for backing up just folders you can select what you want so long as it's a folder. Never tried profiles though

Never tried profiles though Synctoy 2.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C26EFA36-98E0-4EE9-A7C5-98D0592D8C52&displaylang=en)should do it all - its free and works well  Only downside is you cant schedule it to run automatically unless you enter it under scheduled tasks in the OS.

One of the backup methods that I use, not free, but does work very well is Handybackup (http://www.handybackup.com/) - you can schedule it to run as often as you want to any location, either CD/DVD, Removable HD or any location on a LAN / Another PC - does have a free trial.

Try 'right click > run as administrator' when you start your Maxtor Manager software. I have to do that with my backup software.
