Hope you guys can help me with these 2 problems-still an amateur with computers :p

1.Am trying to show hidden files and folders in XP home but windows is not letting me. After selecting "show hidden files and folders" and clicking apply I went back into folder options and it was on "Do not show hidden files and folders"?????

2.As I am a computer geek in training I decided to play around with device manager-in doing so I must have accidentally uninstalled something as now I can't hear anythign from my speakers and this message comes up when I try to play music through WMP

:help: please!!!

Eh? Is that your other nick in here?

Are there any default sound devices under sounds / audio tab?

If not, you may have to reinstall the drivers

Yep-it says no sound device-but I've tried reinstalling the realtek drivers-but still doesn't work

Ah ok then. Check the BIOS to see if someone disabled the sound

Are you sure you installed the right driver for this mobo?

Blam

Pretty sure I installed the right driver-I checked with msinfo32

Here's (http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/untitled1.bmp) the screenshot

I also went to dxdiag(direct X diagnostic tool) and went to the sound tab. I did a screenshot-here (http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/untitled1223447471.bmp).

Here (http://i36.tinypic.com/2qi9vsw.jpg)'s the error in WMP

Hope this helps

Scan for new hardware. See if it detects then installs the drivers for it again

Is there anything under sounds / audio tab that you can select for the default device?? ie: the modem if its a voice modem?

Other than that you may have to do a restore.. back to the original software.

If its there

I'll try that ASAP

Thanks Speedy

Why not do a System Restore ? find a restore point before you started playing around and your system should revert to the safe condition it was previously in. weorth a go. Good luck Blam.

Could require the MS UUA HD driver, has this just had SP3 installed?

That was my first thought until I had realised that I had recently turned off system restore to remove a virus!!:badpc:

Probably this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111)

Altho SP3 shouldnt need it

SP3 wasnt released with the MS UUA driver and is known to break audio on some chipsets after install..

Thanks Speedy, I'll check it out now

BTW just out of interest, how many hours do you spend facing your PC (not work) during a day? It seems like you're always on PressF1 lol :D

SP3 wasnt released with the MS UUA driver and is known to break audio on some chipsets after install..

It included KB888111 tho. According to the MS site for XP SP3

Altho I proved MS wrong a few months ago lol. In their newsgroups, they stated This was included in SP3 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120/)

It wasnt. You had to download it (for SP3), then extract the files in it, then install it manually to get it to appear.

BUT there is now a fix on the above site for SP3. So it installs when you run the hotfix.

I dont work Blam. I'm at home, not work.

And where I used to work, you didnt have access to the internet. Only email, with permission

Thats why I'm here :D

BTW speedy-I still can't show hidden files and folders-do you have any ideas?

What folder / or file are you trying to see / look for exactly?

Did you click on OK after you clicked on apply. Then go to whatever folder, to see if you could see it?

You could be selecting the wrong option (show all files instead of hide protected OS system files), which is completely different

Blam

Any folder-and yes-I clicked ok after I clicked apply
I'm sure I am selecting "Show hidden files and folders"
