I have Win XP, Thunderbird 2.0.0.16 and Avast 4.8 home antivirus.
My emails were sending from Thunderbird thru Gmail to my recepients showing as coming from my Xnet address. Xnet have conveniently blocked SMTP for overseas users. All of a sudden I get the message....

'unable to connect to SMTP server smtp.gmail.com via STARTTLS in EHLO response. Please check your settings and try again'.

I've checked my settings and nothing works. Any ideas?

Sounds like the same prob here (http://www.techienuggets.com/commentList.jsp?tx=36704&tx=36704&d-49653-p=1)

Did you do this as above?

You have to enable pop3 from the options page from the "webmail page" and set the account information for thunderbird to:

incoming: pop.gmail.com port 995 SSL, user is the "gmail user"
