My partner has about 10GB of games on her XP lappy. We would like to take them off the lappy and get them so they can be played on any XP puter.I have tried copying one game to a flash stick and it was playable as usual on her lappy but not on another box.I guess there is protection on her machine so the games are not copied and given to others but how can this "protection "go with the game on another external HDD.

Copying and moving installed .exe's will not be very successful, you need to copy and move the original installers, which you actually may not have. I always save any program that I download for future use.

MojoPac (http://www.mojopac.com/portal/content/hellomojo.jsp) will do what you want. Install it to an external drive, and it shows a second desktop (with the black background and the MojoPac logo: change it ASAP IMO). Install games to this as normal, then they will be portable. :)
