My computer hangs up on start up if it has been switched off for a day or so. It doesnt do it if shut down then immediately re started.
It does the initial boot thru the bios, then a single beep, then it recognises the drives and gets down to a message "Verifying DMI pool data..." After this the screen goes blank and nothing happens.
I can boot into safe mode using F8. If I then tell it to boot with a log, it will boot up normally.
Im using XP SP2
Mobo is soltek SL-75DRV4
Any help appreciated. I have downloaded HIjack this so could post a log.

Has Cmos battery been replaced?, (m'board is six years old; possible candidate for leaking capacitors (http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=195) too  ).

Hi I have replaced the cmos battery when these problems first started. I will lift the lid and take a look at the capacitors.
I have made the changes suggested by speedy gonzales. Tonight I will shut the machine down, leave it overnight, and see what happens tomorrow.

Is Norton 360 installed?

42south
14-08-2008, 10:11 AM
hi I think we may be close to the fix. I started up this morning and it locked up as usual, but I only had to push the reset button once and it booted normally.
I have made the change you suggested.
I used to have Norton system works installed, and antivirus, but not 360. However I changed to AVG. So the process you mention could be a leftover from that era. I did try to remove all trace of Norton, but it is hard to get everything. I have downloaded and installed the revo uninstaller which was recommended in the magazine recently.
Here is the log at start up this morning.

looking at that log its clean.

If it boots Ok in safe mode, but not normally usually that's a driver issue.

From safe mode click My computer, right click your C Drive / Properties, select Tools, Click Check Now, put ticks in both the boxes that appear, tell it to scan the drive, then click YES when it asks to scan on next reboot. Reboot the PC, let it load normally, it should run through chkdsk, it will tak e a while but dont stop it.

Looking at the Hijack log, you can remove the following from the startup, not bugs but don't need to run.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RoxWatchTray] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\RoxWatchTray9.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DMXLauncher] "C:\Program Files\Roxio\Media Experience\DMXLauncher.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RoxioDragToDisc] "C:\Program Files\Roxio\Drag-to-Disc\DrgToDsc.exe"

O23 - Service: Symantec Lic NetConnect service (CLTNetCnService) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe (file missing)

Download Ccleaner from my sig as well, run that then once cleaned, click on the tools Icon, Startup, list or do a screen shot of whats left in the startup list. The other way is click start/run and type in msconfig then select the startup tab, do a screen shot or list the items left.

hi guys Well I did everything that wainuitech recommended, and i must say that my machine runs much faster. However my problem remains. I shut down overnight and on startup this morning I got the same problem as originally described. It took three presses of the reset button to finally come up with a blue screen with the following message

Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Then a lot of stuff about checking new hardware and software, disabling Bios shadowing and caching.
then
*** Techinical info
STOP:0x000000D1 (0x00000022,0x00000002,0x00000000,0xF84E7508)

ACPI.sys-address F84E7508 base at F84E7000, datestamp 41107d27

I also took a screen shot of the msconfig startup menu:

HKCU:run cfmon.exe C;\windows\system32\ctfmon.exe
HKLM:run AVG8_tray C:\progra~1\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exe
HKLM:run NvCplDaemon RUNDLL32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32 \NvCPL.DLL,NVStartup
Startupcommon Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk C:\Program files\common files\adobe\calibration\adobe gamma loader.exe
Startupcommon Mikrotek scanner finder.lnk C:\program files\microtek\scanwizard 5\scannerfinder.exe

Sorry to have to print all that in but no way would screenshot print into this message.

Hoping you can help, thanks for your help so far.

Did you ever check the capacitors?

I would say its this file that you posted

ACPI.sys thats making it crash. Update to XP SP3, or update the BIOS / Or both

Hi I am taking your advice speedy and going to do a Bios upgrade.
The Soltek Mobo site directs me to a 3rd party company called Touchstone software with a product called Biosagent plus 28exe. For a fee of $29USD this site will analyse my machine and provide BIOS update and driver update for all my other bits, for a 1 year period.
What is encouraging is that it specifically mentions the ACPI update available with the BIOS upgrade. So we may be onto it.
Any comments about tips and tricks for a bios upgrade. I will create a restore point on my machine before I start.

You cant make a restore point with a BIOS update, since you dont normally do it in Windows.

Well with some systems you can, but you've got a BIGGER chance of it freezing during the flashing of the BIOS. And killing the system completely, if it does freeze. Then all you'll be using it for is a doorstop.

There is no way that any system restore point will backup the BIOS, no matter if you flash within windows or not.

I would SERIOUSLY consider looking into this more than just spending $29 on a new BIOS which I doubt will help - because I assume that the machine has been working fine until recently when you now start having this problem, yes?

In which case it is NOT the BIOS, the BIOS would not suddenly become a problem - it will either have problems or not (and if so, you would have noticed them before)

I would highly suspect the capacitors - soltek are well known to have bad ones and 6yr old board is highly likely to develop a problem. Since you haven't said anything about them yet I assume you haven't checked them - look for leaking (brown stuff on top) bulging, or brown gunk leaking out from beneath them. If any of these symptoms are present then it's almost certain your problem is caused by bad capacitors.

I say this because I recently had 2 soltek boards (both with leaking capacitors) which did not even POST at all. After replacing the capacitors on both I managed to get one working. Not sure about the other, it may have a corrupt BIOS - haven't looked into it yet.

Other than this it could be faulty RAM causing the problem - have you tried running memtest at all?

If you do want a BIOS update, it should be possible to get one without having to pay for it. (archived version of soltek's website should do the trick - I'd find the latest myself now but I'm a bit busy and it usually takes a while)

Thanks guys
I did check the capacitors, and there are a couple with slightly swollen tops but no corrosion around the base.
This problem is not recent it has been ongoing for the last 6 months.
From your comment speedy I take it that I should run the flasher from the command line?
Ill run memtest and see what happens

A question guys, If I replace the Mobo what would you recommend. I am a home user who does internet, home accounts, some photo editing, and not much else.
I have really appreciated your advice. I live in Whakatane and sensible advice is very hard to come by.
Cheers

From DOS (not DOS from within Windows)

You'll need a bootable floppy or USB flash drive (if the mobo supports booting from one).

And files from somewhere like ie: The 98 boot files (www.bootdisk.com)

You'll need AWDflash which looks like this is what this mobo uses and the BIOS update.

Altho this might be a bit tricky, if the Soltek site no longer exists. And quite a few sites in Google point to this site for the BIOS update

Depends what kind of system you want, and how much you can afford / want to spend on a new system.

Only thing is depending on what kind of system you get, you may have to replace the mobo, CPU, and ram. And keep the case and power supply.

Yes, the capacitors which are swollen have already failed, no doubt the others are failing also. Which is highly likely why you're getting this problem. They usually fail electrically before the physical symptoms become present - which would explain why you've been having the problem for a while.

Leave them longer and they will eventually start leaking electrolyte

If your PSU is cheap and also old, I wouldn't be surprised to find bad capacitors in it too.

It's also likely you will find that memtest fails.

Obviously a replacement board will be impossible to buy new - socket A is long finished with but you may be able to find something good on trademe (unless of course you want to buy a new board and upgrade everything)

The other option is to replace the capacitors - which means you can keep all your other hardware. You just need to find someone who will do it

May be able to find someone on the http://badcaps.net/ forums (and to get more info if you want)

If you do want to try updating the BIOS (though I wouldn't recommend it - your board could hang etc and cause a failed flash) what seems to be the latest BIOS is here: http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=115570 (you'll need to create an account if you don't already have one)

It also says you need PCB revision/version P4 to use it - so make sure of that also.

Hi guys
I think you may be right. A Mobo upgrade might be the best idea. Money would not be a problem, but I want a good quality one.
A board that would future proof me for a few years would be my preference.
I have just purchased a new power supply recently so have plugs etc for the modern gear.
Any suggestions.

Anything from the Asus range and they seem to have a good forum too, also as an aside the atheros network adapter supplied on Asus boards does not work with comodo firewall it is documented here on this forum by me and is also on the Asus forum documented by their members
