Hi! Everyone

Sorry I'm always asking stupid questions but today I need your recommendation.

MY COMPUTER IS EXTREMELY SLOW!!!!!!
Not because I have lots and lots of software, but becaause my computer is using heaps of ram.

Like firefox, using up around 100000KB of ram, and same with safari.
And many antivirus programs, like Norton (it takes around 30Sec to run).
These days if I don't use the internet I would usally use Ubuntu or run Windows in Safe Mode. This way it is faster. It takes around 6min to logon and the taskbar usally frezzes so I have to usally press Ctrl+Alt+Del to wake up the taskbar (sometimes that doesn't work either). Here's the list of software that I have installed (may not be accurate):

You can tell me some recommendations (e.g. uninstall something)

Thanks

First thing you should only have one antivirus program installed, as multiple can cause problems. Uninstall Norton its basically useless anyway, also ditch AVG. Avast is the best of the lot and will do fine on its own.

Your versions of Java are out of date and should be updated.

I'll leave the HJT log for someone more knowledgeable with them like Speedy.

EDIT: Once you uninstall Norton's download CCleaner links in my signature and run that to remove any traces. Just noticed you already have it.

Welcome to PressF1

OK first things first, get rid of Norton, the crappiest software anyone ever written. Go download Avast

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

You need to register (free)

Uninstall Norton and install Avast.

EDIT: You already have avast sorry about that.

ONLY HAVE 1 ANTI-VIRUS! You have 3! Get rid of AVG and Norton.

Then get rid of Adobe Reader 8.1.1 since you have a newer version.

Also you probably don't need XP to look pretty if you want it fast, so get rid of Vista Start Menu.

What's this? 金山词霸 2006 实用版 by xunchi Doesn't sound useful, uninstall it.

HijackThis log things to tick

I would wait for speedy but these are my recommendations

Scan again and tick the following and click fixed checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCMService] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerCinema\PCMService.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Now wait for Speedy, there are so many things that you have to do, I don't have the time to type it out....

Also, if you don't mind paying for anti-virus, get NOD 32 Antivirus or Eset Smart Security.

AV is Anti-Virus, Uninstall AVG and Norton, update Avast, and scan.

AV is also on the list of apps you said you have.

Also you have these on your apps list

Microsoft Office 2003 Web Components
Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003
Microsoft Office XP Web Components

I don't think you need Office XP Web components, uninstall it.

Tick these as well

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0579B4B6-0293-4d73-B02D-5EBB0BA0F0A2} - C:\Program Files\AskSBar\SrchAstt\1.bin\A2SRCHAS.DLL

If there's an entry to uninstall it (in this folder), uninstall it

Update Malwarebytes then scan

It probably runs smoothly because you got rid of Norton ;)

Agent_24
13-08-2008, 12:11 AM
Probably runs smooth if you stopped using 3 antivirus at once, which would all try to be scanning files at the same time (realtime protection), which would cause your hard drive to do a lot of work and would definitely slow down your PC a lot
