I have icons that appear and disappear from my task bar for no apparent reason. The volume icon comes and goes, despite having the “display volume icon in task bar” box ticked in control panel. The “safely remove hardware” is another than comes and goes, without any doing on my part. Each time I start the computer a different display of icons appear. Any ideas would be appreciated

Have you scanned your system, for malware?

Several possible fixes This Article (http://winhlp.com/node/16) gives some option / fixes

or this sometimes works according to a few people:
Open Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, on the left side: Add/Remove Windows components; select Networking Services, click on the Details... button, remove the checkmark for the UPnP User Interface, then click on OK.

Thanks for the advice and link to the article wainuitech. Interesting that so much research and discussion has gone into it. I'll try your solution when the problem appears again; currently all of my icons are behaving themselves.

Interesting.
I've had a guy ring and say he gets no icons, no taskbar, nothing.
He can ctrl/alt/del, and right click and get results.

If he pulls the battery from the laptop, shuts down and leaves it overnight, then boots up its OK, but then he reboots and they all vanish again.
