Wow. How many different digital cameras are there on the market atm?

I'm looking for a small (think fit in a handbag) digital camera for my wife.

Price wise, thinking up to $250, but if we can get something 'good' for cheaper then all the better.

I want one with SD memory slot as we have approx 5 gig in the format.

But where to start?

There were some Samsung ones going cheap; I think they were bringing in the newer model. Samsung any good? I've got a Panasonic Lumix and it has never missed a beat, but they do seem to be on the pricey side.

Advice?

edit: Oh and would rather not go Kodak, we've had 2x Kodak cameras that hve broken down just out of warranty.

First I start with the memory card first - check which cameras support 5GB - not all cams might do that.

Next is what exact size you are after - pocket size or shirt size.

Pretty much for these cams, and this price they are pretty much v similar to each other. Stick with major brands. Don't worry about megapixels if you can get a smaller one and its cheaper all the merrier .. Again if its for a casual user - don't worry about feature other than maybe ISO if you use low light and image stabiliser, for the manual settings etc. the person may not even care about that ....

Oh I meant 5 gig worth of memory, mostly 1gig cards.

I noticed wandering around the local Appliance Shed last weekend that they had some nice-looking Panasonic compact digitals - in that kind of price range too.

Comments?

edit: Dang it, forgot about the SD cards. Stupid Sony with their stupid own memory.

Some of the cheaper cameras do not have that great a LCD screen so if you can find a camera with an old fashioned view finder for bright light situations so much the better. My wifes Nikon L11 is hopeless when taking a picture with full sunlight from behind, pity really because it can take good pictures.

My mother purchased a Samsung from Dick Smith today, she's very happy with it. Takes SD Cards, runs with 2 x AA batteries, 2.4" screen and $139 on special.

Model XG4331

My wife's business and a friend each have one of those Samsungs. For the price they cannot be beat and they are very good overall - great pics and video clips. I don't think the Samsung has an optical viewfinder but most people don't use them (I do!). I did find that old AA rechargeables do not last long in the Samsung, as they do in my two digcams. Eneloop batteries (get them at DSE) should be used in the Samsung as these batteries hold their charge better and the Samsungs work fine with them.

I like Canon, cameras, printers and scanners. I've got a powershot A400 and my friend has got an Eos, he says he wouldn't buy anything else

I have a Fuji camera. For several reasons, I will never buy another Fuji product.
Perhaps they are a bit variable? On the bright side, I took a dog out of circulation.
